Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis

Round 1: The round starts off slow, both fighters content to feel each other out. Davis tries for the takedown, but gets caught in a front face lock, but escapes back to his feet rather quickly. Davis misses with a superman punch and slips to the mat, but is quickly up and tied up with Evans, pushing him back towards the fence. Evans has the center of the Octagon, moving Davis around the outside, but Davis does a good job popping in and out, landing some jabs. Evans catches him off guard and puts Davis on the mat, going to work from half guard before passing to side control. Evans puts Davis in a crucifix, raining punches to his face with his left hand. Davis gets out of the crucifix position, Evans maintaining side control to the bell. MMAWeekly.com scores round one 10-9 for Evans.

Round 2: Davis goes for the head kick right away, but misses. Evans counters with a good one-two combination. They clinch briefly, but Davis shifts into trying to establish his jab, mixing in some low kicks along the way. Davis clinches, but Evans doesn’t stay there for long, and they’re back to looking for openings for their striking. Evans presses Davis to the fence and lands a sweeping elbow before they separate. Davis looks a little bit of f his rhythm, trying to find a home for his punches, while Evans is staying tight, letting loose with accurate flurries when he decides to throw. Evans presses Davis to the cage again, landing a small flurry, taking a knee to the body from Davis, but outstriking him overall. Evans catches a Davis kick, puts him on the mat, and immediately moves to side control, landing a few blows to the head before the bell sounds. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Evans.

Round 3: They dance around for a time, Davis shoots, but Evans stuffs the shot, peppering Davis with a few punches to the head. Davis maintains his grasp on Evans’ leg, working him to the mat, but Evans is still sitting upright against the cage, not in much danger. Davis maintains control for a time, but Evans turns the tables, putting Davis on his side, pinned against the fence. Evans starts punishing him with shots to the head before slipping to Davis’ back. Davis gets out and back to his feet, Evans pressing him to the fence. Good knee to the face from Davis, but Evans maintains control and landing and uppercut. Evans stuffs another takedown attempt, keeping Davis pinned on the fence. Another uppercut by Evans. Davis still trying to fire back then drops and scores the double-leg takedown. But they get up and clinch along the fence until the end of the round. MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 for Evans.

Round 4: Davis comes out firing, but there’s not much zip on his punches. Evans looks more composed, and more energetic, calmly picking his shots as Davis tries to get some sort of meaningful offense going. Evans is now out-punching Davis about five to one at this point and with more pep in his punch. Evans gets Davis to the mat, Davis on all fours, Evans taking his back and punching him in the face. Davis gets up, but Evans is all over him, pressing him into the fence, controlling the clinch, stuffing Davis’ takedown attempts. Evans lands a counter right hand that staggers Davis a bit just before the end of the round. MMAWeekly.com scores round four 10-9 for Evans.

Round 5: They start off slow again, but Evans catches a Davis kick about a minute in and lands numerous punches to the face before putting Davis on the mat, working from his half guard. Evans quickly passes from half guard to mount, briefly putting Davis in a crucifix again. Davis turns, Evans takes his back briefly, but they separate and start looking for punches again. Evans lands a stiff right hand followed by a leg kick. Davis clinches, but it’s clear that Evans is in control, keeping Davis up against the fence. They separate with just under a minute left in the fight, Davis missing with nearly everything he throws, while Evans remains calm and picks his openings, landing some solid punch combinations before the end of the fight.
