Demian Maia vs. Chris Weidman

Round 1: Both fighters content to stand and trade in the opening minutes of the fight. Weidman is more active, trying to get his jab going, but Maia sneaks in a few shots of his own, doing a good job working in knees to the body. Maia rocks Weidman a bit with a solid left hand midway through the round, but Weidman fires back with a knee of his own. He quickly follows up with a good punch combination that lands, backing Maia up. Weidman lands a few more punches then scores a takedown. Their immediately back to their feet, firing away. Maia lands a solid knee to the body as the round winds down, but Weidman counters with his own knee to the body. MMAWeekly.com scores round one 10-9 for Weidman.

Round 2: Weidman comes out firing and scores another takedown. Again, their time on the mat is brief. Weidman landing more frequently with his punches than Maia, and it’s becoming more and more distinct. Maia looks somewhat frustrated at this point in the fight, nearing the midway point. They continue trading punches until Weidman shoots again, but this time Maia defends the shot and lands some knees to the body and some stinging jabs. Weidman ties Maia up and powers him to the mat for the final 20 seconds of the fight. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Weidman.

Round 3: Weidman works his way into another takedown, but still can’t do much with his position on the mat. Back up to their feet, they start trading, Maia going for knees to the body again, but Weidman snapping his head back with punches. Weidman stuffs a Maia takedown attempt and they resume throwing punches, but both fighters are gassing and getting sloppy. Both are landing, but neither appears to have the steam to finish the other. Maia starts edging ahead with his frequency, but then Weidman fires back with a few knees that find their mark on Maia’s face, but again, they don’t have the power behind them at this late stage of the fight. Maia lands a few two-punch combos, but Weidman fires back with a knee and head kick, stealing the round. It’s a close fight, much closer than we’ve scored it, but MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 and the fight 30-27 for Weidman.
