The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Chicago this week for UFC on Fox 2: Evans vs. Davis on Saturday at the United Center.
The event marks the promotion’s second live event on Fox, but in many ways it’s the first. Velasquez vs. dos Santos in November was but a preview of things to come, so Evans vs. Davis, with it’s triple-bill has pressure to deliver the goods.
The main event features Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis in a light heavyweight bout, with Evans, if he wins and comes out unscathed, gaining the next shot at champion Jon Jones. The co-main event is another battle for the belt, as the winner between Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping gets a shot at Anderson Silva this summer in Brazil. Kicking things off on Fox is another middleweight tilt, this one featuring Demian Maia and Chris Weidman.
Evans and Davis both hit the 205-pound limit on the head, each looking fit and ready to go, Davis in a wrestling singlet from his alma mater, Penn State.
There’s been a lot of talk between these two, but despite an intense staredown, they were both rather respectful in their remarks.
“Rashad is a good fighter and he’s always put on great fights and I can’t wait to test my skills against such a great fighter,” said Davis after he stepped off the scale. “It’s a good fight to build my career off of.”
Evans acknowledged the trash talk, saying, “It’s gonna be a good fight tomorrow. We’ve both been talking a lot and it’s time to see who’s gonna back up their words.”
If ever there was a co-main event that could headline just as well as the main event Sonnen vs. Bisping is it. The two both came in exactly on weight at 185 pounds and went nose-to-nose on the staredown, but shook hands afterward, ready to prove who is the better man in the Octagon come Saturday night in Chi-Town.
Everyone else on the card made weight without an issue.
