Following a recent victory, Matt Mitrione had hoped to fight former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski. Mitrione now has his next fight set, but it’s not with Arlovski.
Mitrione (8-3) is coming off of back-to-back knockout victories over Shawn Jordan and Derrick Lewis. And now he’d like to build on that momentum with a win over Gonzaga on Dec. 13.
His recent successes are a welcome turn for Mitrione, who had lost three of his four previous bouts, prior to the consecutive knockouts victories.
Gonzaga (16-8), a former UFC heavyweight title challenger, is on his second run through the UFC. He is 4-2 during his current tenure, but is unfortunately coming off of a loss to Stipe Miocic.
The UFC on FOX 13 also features another heavyweight showdown between Alistair Overeem and Stefan Struve, and may be adding a third, with rumors swirling that the UFC is trying to put Junior dos Santos vs. Stipe Miocic on the Phoenix fight card as well.
