Alistair Overeem wasted no time in getting a win at UFC on FOX 13, knocking out Stefan Struve in the first round on Saturday in Phoenix.

Overeem, known for his striking, decided to put the fight to the ground. It worked out for him and he earned the knockout at 4:13 of the opening five minutes.

“I was prepared for everything,” he said. “I felt it would be clever to take him down and destroy him there.”

Both fighters were cautious in the early moments of the contest. Overeem committed to the takedown offense and secured one, putting Struve on his back.

Once on the ground, Overeem transitioned from being inside and outside of Struve’s guard before working ground and pound on his 7-foot opponent. Once he was able to find the angles around Struves lengthy legs, Overeem pounded away at his grounded foe before earning the TKO win in the opening frame.

With the win, Overeem rebounds from his last contest where he was knocked out in the first round by Ben Rothwell.

IDK man, that G-n-P looked pretty vicious.

He just fought smart. We keep on talking about his kickboxing skills but forget how top notch are his grappling skills.

easy to look like monster on the ground when your opponent hasn’t fought in a while, never had good striking defense anywhere, and the only danger he really presents on the ground is a triangle. i give him his props for getting the win, but his standup looked very tentative and insecure.

gotta think they do him vs jds whenever they’re ready.

i thought he looked pretty scared on the feet too, and against a man who hasnt fought in a long while, hes just very aware that jaw is not able to take the punishment the heavyweights are able to dish out. gnp is his best bet for sucess he aint getting ko’d on the ground and he has some good ground game, if he cant get the fight to the ground then he can stand and trade.

He is great at striking and gnp and very well rounded. He seems to have two small problems. No gas tank, and a glass chin. I know you can work on the gas tank but the chin doesn’t come back.
