UFC Launches Official Media-Voted Rankings; Anderson Silva Tops Pound-for-Pound

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Anderson Silva at UFC 117The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday launched the official UFC Fighter Rankings as voted on by a select panel of media members.

A fighter is only eligible to be voted on if they are in active status in the UFC and a fighter can only appear in one weight division at a time. The champion and interim champion are considered to be in the top positions of their respective divisions and therefore are not eligible for voting by weight-class. However, the champions can be voted on for the pound-for-pound rankings.

Voting panelists: Neil Springer (Sun Media), Chris Palmquist (MixedMartialArts.com), James Koh (FOX 11 Los Angeles), Bob Emanuel (Scripps Howard News Service), Mark Daniels (Boston Herald), Steve Feiti (Asbury Park Press), Grant Gordan (Burbank Leader), Jeremy Botter (Houston Chronicle), Case Keefer (Las Vegas Sun), Ana Hissa (Mundo da Lut), Jeff Wagenheim (SI.com), Paulo Favero (O Estado de S Paulo), Anthony Springer Jr. (FightNews), Andreas Hale (FightNews), Marc Raimondi (NY Post), Joe Ferraro (Sportsnet), Marcelo Russio (Canal Combate), Brett Okamoto (ESPN.com), Franklin McNeil (ESPN.com), Guga Noblat (O Globo), Ken Pishna (MMAWeekly.com), Mike Johnston (Sportsnet), Marcelo Alonso (Portal do Vale-Tudo), John Silver (Chicago Sun-Times), Mario Filho (OSS TV), Claudia Lima (VIP), Damon Martin (MMAWeekly.com), Steve Cofield (ESPN Radio).

You define the word “troll “

  • Wolf

GSP behind JJ is a crime

    • shakejunt

don’t disagree, but i think it comes down to the notion that jones has been finishing legends in his division while gsp has been grinding out his wins.

    • Mancruz

I agree. Sure JJ has been on a tear, but GSP has been straight dominating his division for years now and can easily overcome any adversity. It’s a shame.

    • kbroesq

It’s a ‘crime’? Really? He’s one spot behind him. Are you that confident that if weight were not an issue, GSP would beat Jones? I’m not. Even if I thought GSP might beat Jones if weight were not issue, I certainly wouldn’t be SO confident about it to call it a ‘crime’ to put Jones ONE SPOT ahead of GSP in P4P rankings.

  • Richard

I agree with John Jones above GSP actually. I never thought I’d see the day.

  • http://twitter.com/Uncanny390 Timothy Malone

I would say they got all the right names but not quite the right order. I would have GSP above Jones and even Edgar above Johnson. Edgar has fought better competition and has always made it close even with his recent losses

    • Gvapo

      Quit trolling

  • dgine

Pretty decent list. Everything is debatable but good placements.

  • Nut buster

    What about Rashad Evans ?

    • shakejunt

      after saturday?

Hendo as a top 10 p4p? Not sure I agree with that one. Wouldn’t Machida or Renan Barao be a better choice?

Other than that I think that is a decent list.

    • http://twitter.com/jonasholgersson Jonas

Machida would be my choice over Hendersson… but we will soon find out!

    • kennybro

i would’ve said rashad over hendo/machida if it weren’t for that nonfight he just had.

      /sad

  • Spider

Why Jones is higher than GSP?, Ok Jones is good but not better than GSP. And i see Frank Mir is higher than Overeem, ok Reem loss to Bigfoot but why Murr is higher.

    • kbroesq

Wow, I can’t believe the outcry that Jones is ahead of GSP. It makes sense to me. I’m a huge GSP fan, but Jones has demolished every fighter (most of which were former champs) he has fought, and he hasn’t even been hurt in the process. GSP has been winning, but been getting beat back in the process. He beat Condit, no doubt, but got pretty beat up in the process. Lackluster decision to Shields, etc. Is this THAT surprising? Give me a break!

  • Fan

Cain is best p4p no doubt but they are always going to have anderson n jones first! Gsp is aboce jones johnson should not be on list.

    • JimmyPettishardo

Cain’s not even undisputed in his weight class. I would have said JDS as p4p top 5 had he beaten Cain and Overeem. JDS beat more top guys at HW than Cain.

  • Swamp Donkey

Chael Sonnen isn’t on any top ten list. Gets next shot at LHW title. Makes perfect sense to me.

  • MMA JUNKIE

    Where the fxck is JDS?

  • http://www.facebook.com/george.sperry.16 George Sperry

Frankie loses a raszor close decision to the Champ and he is placed 5th in the division and 9th P4P?

    Champion
    :

    Jose Aldo

    1

    Chad Mendes

    2

    Ricardo Lamas

    3

    Chan Sung Jung

    4

    Frankie Edgar

  • Sir_Roy

GSP deserves #2 despite his lack of spectacular ‘finishes’ IMHO. Jon Jones has more work ahead of him before he surpasses GSP.

  • Yup

    1. Silva
    2. GSP
    3. JJ
    4. Aldo
    5. Ben Hen
    6. Hendo
    7, Cruz
The rest don’t deserve to be named yet. Im not saying they are not great but the top 6 here have proven over and over they are the best of the best.

    • JimmyPettishardo

Your list is who HAS DONE the most for MMA, rather than who IS the current best fighter.

A Silva and GSP has done more than JJ. But JJ is more impressive. He dominated guys in the LHW in a single year. And each of those guys were at one time considered the best LHW of all time or #1 LHW. Remember the Machida era and Shogun’s comeback? He destroyed both.

Anderson and GSP has dominated their respective weightclasses longer. But look at the opponents they’ve faced. Chris Leben, Thiago Alves, Travis Lutter…I mean….these guys are not exactly Machidas and Shoguns of MMA.

      • Sir_Roy

You focused on Silva’s division, but conveniently left out GSP’s list of accomplishments; Koscheck, Condit, Fitch, Alves … which kind of pisses on your point as all were at the very top of their respective games and all were considered #1 contenders in a (still) extremely stacked division. In fact, the welter weight division is arguably the most stacked and talent rife division in the UFC. GSP doesn’t finish, but he does dominate these extremely talented fighters in all their respective strengths.

Silva circumvents the fact that his competition, (I would agree) has been for the most part sub-par by completely dominating nearly all of his opponents and finishing in spectacular fashion more often than not, completely running through most of his competition, in ways even Jones cannot, and has not, accomplished.

Jon Jones is third on that list. But I can see why they let GSP slide a slot seeing as how he was out of commission for a good year and a half.

  • Matte

I agree with GSP being number 2 and I’ll explain why:

He and Anderson has this superhuman quality that makes them stay dominant even though they are part of an older breed of fighters, they are not part of the generation growing up training MMA from the beginning and that is a handicap considering the sport has been so fast evolving. Yet both GSP and Anderson stay such dominant champions.

Jon Jones is amazing, no doubt, José Aldo aswell. They may very well stay on that list for a long time.

The guy commenting on Frankie Edgar being no 5 in his division: That’s not that bad considering he has only fought once and lost you think? I agree in Frankie being even better than no 5 but it makes sense he has to beat someone to earn that ranking spot.

  • kennybro

good to see frankie as the highest ranked nonchampion. i’m still bitter about his last lightweight loss.

  • bajafox

I’m just glad Maggie Hendricks doesn’t get to vote…

    • http://www.facebook.com/george.sperry.16 George Sperry

I’m even happier you don’t get to vote.

      • bajafox

Me too, I don’t think I have the knowledge it takes to vote. Good observation on your part.

  • http://twitter.com/BlackWolf_8 Vince

I think gsp should be before jones, regardless of the finishing debate. Jones dominance isn’t sniffing gsp’s.

  • Gvapo

Anderson shouldn’ even be on list for his blatant display of cowwardness he is displaying by ducking weidman the future champ

  • Gvapo

Anderson (the hider) silva is gonna get destroyed by chris (the spider crusher

  • Gvapo

Silva was dominated by munoz in sparring consistently so much so that munoz started calling out silva. Silva was stunned at munoz calling him out and was in process of ducking munoz. Then silva sees weidman destroy munoz easily. This is why silva is ducking weidman. Silva do the duck dance
