The Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Charlotte, N.C., on Wednesday night, importing legendary Japanese fighter Takanori Gomi to face lightweight contender Kenny Florian in the main event a Bojangles Coliseum.
Florian and Gomi have the same goal, to capture UFC championship gold.
Florian has come up short in the UFC; losing attempts to take the title from both Sean Sherk and current champion B.J. Penn. This is first bout in the Octagon, but he has held titles for both Shooto and Pride in Japan.
The two title hopefuls stepped on the scales Tuesday afternoon to make their headlining bout official. Florian weighed in at 156 pounds – non-title bouts are allowed a one-pound overage – while Gomi stepped on the scale at 155 even.
There wasn’t a lot of fan fair or friction as the two squared off for the media and fans then bowed to each other.
The main card is dotted with past “Ultimate Fighter” participants. Roy Nelson faces Stefan Struve, Nate Quarry battles Jorge Rivera, and Ross Pearson will fight Dennis Siver to round out the Spike TV telecast leading into the season premier of “The Ultimate Fighter Season 11.”
All the fighters made weight.
