Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Gegard Mousasi are finally set to meet in the Octagon as the main event of UFC Fight Night 50 on Friday at Foxwoods Resort Casino in Ledyard, Conn. Jacare, Mousasi, and the rest of the fighters on the card weighed in Thursday afternoon.
This won’t be the first time the two have fought, however. Jacare and Mousasi first met in a battle for the inaugural Dream middleweight championship in September of 2008. Mousasi was the better man that night, knocking Jacare out with an up-kick a little more than two minutes into the fight.
Now, however, Jacare is ranked No. 4 in the official UFC rankings, while Mousasi sits at No. 7, and both men are zeroing in on a shot at the title. A win on Friday night will make a strong case for the victor to keep his name in the mix.
Only one fight had trouble with his weight. Featherweight Charles Oliveira was four pounds over the 146-pound limit for his bout with Nik Lentz. While it was initially announce that he would have two hours to drop the extra baggage, Connecticut statute afforded Oliveira three hours to try and make weight.
Oliveira, however, did not make weight. His fight with Lentz will take place, but Oliveira was docked 20-percent of his fight purse.
