Jacare-Souza-019-SF-478x270Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza exacted his revenge, submitting Gegard Mousasi in the main event at UFC Fight Night Foxwoods in Ledyard, Conn. on Friday.

Souza dominated Mousasi on the ground in a rematch of their 2008 fight in Japan, securing a number of takedowns before applying a guillotine choke at the 4:30 mark of the third round.

“If anyone doubts that, they’re completely wrong,” Souza said when asked if he’s done enough to earn a title shot. “I’m next for the title.”

A number of early takedown attempts finally paid off halfway through the opening round for Souza. While on the ground, Jacare controlled from top position and worked towards a kimura attempt, but he let it go a moment before the end of the round.

Souza began to land more strikes on the feet in the beginning of the second round, and he then secured another takedown, landing in Mousasi’s guard. From there, Souza scrambled and got to side control where he attempted yet another kimura. Mousasi defended and made it through to the end of the time frame.

In the third round, Jacare again outstruck Mousasi in the early moments and secured another takedown. After briefly returning to his feet, Mousasi was taken down again and Souza worked towards standing over his opponent and securing a guillotine choke for the finish.

With the win at UFC Fight Night, Souza improves his record to 21-3 overall and 3-0 in the UFC, making a significant case for a shot at the UFC middleweight title.

I was reading a Bleacher Report article today about Jacare being a legit threat to Weidman IF he got past Mousasi and I was a little surprised by how many people were laughing at the notion and dismissing him as a one dimensional fighter that would get exposed tonight. I like both these guys but Jacare is a pretty scary fighter. Not going to prognosticate on how he matches up with Weidman but I’d like to see it if Weidman gets past Belfort. And if Souza has to wait, maybe a Rockhold rematch if Luke gets past Bisping.

I always thought… “If Jacare had hands” well low and behold it may not technical but with the amount of heat he puts behind it makes him a serious KO threat. Big Power, stellar submission, inescapable clinch. Too bad he’s not 25

Jacare should fight the winner of Bisping vs Rockhold and the winner of that should get a title shot.

Mousasi fights like he is getting an enema almost bored.
