Diego SanchezDiego Sanchez hadn’t fought in front of his hometown of Albuquerque since 2004 when he stepped into the Octagon on Saturday to take on Ross Pearson in the UFC Fight Night 42 co-main event. Coming off back-to-back losses, Sanchez was in desperate need of a win. And he got one wrapped in controversy.

Pearson was able to effectively stick and move in the opening round, landing counter shots as Sanchez moved forward.

He continued to counter Sanchez in the second frame. With a minute remaining in the round Pearson delivered a right hand that dropped Sanchez. Sanchez immediately bounced back to his feet and urged Pearson to engage. He flurried in the final seconds, but Pearson clearly won the round.

Sanchez picked up his output in the final frame, but Pearson slipped out of the way of most of the strikes and returned fire. The Brit stayed composed and picked Sanchez apart with strikes. At the end of fifteen minutes of fighting, it looked as if Pearson had clearly won all three rounds. Two of the three judges saw it differently.

When the scorecards were read revealing Sanchez the winner, the Albuquerque crowd erupted in cheers as Pearson stood in disbelief.

“You never know when it’s in the judges’ hands,” said Sanchez after the win. “I felt I was going for it more. I felt I was going for the big finishes. It was a great fight. I take my hat off to Ross.”

UFC broadcaster Kenny Florian summed up the decision in his final comments on the fight. “I am still in shock and in disbelief on that decision. I thought Ross Pearson had an easy decision win,” said Florian. “Diego Sanchez, I love you, but Ross Pearson won that fight. And a 30-27 for Diego Sanchez, those judges should be ashamed.”

    Bisping/Hamill vs II

    He… I … They…

I need to apply for my judge licences.

    • taylor2008

From what I have been seeing from the judges all you will need is a birth certificate and a 3rd grade reading level.

  • Obi-Wan Granoli

the qualifications are you can’t think for yourself and …

  • Dragon Kid

Sanchez bloody lost and he knows it.

  • WalnutCreekScott

    That was a complete ripoff.

I’m still waiting for some apology from the judges or an update that the cards were misread….that’s one of the worst 3 decisions…if not worst decision ever. Diego got picked apart in all 3 rounds.

What’s sad is that Sanchez probably thinks that he actually did win. I guess to beat Sanchez you have to KO him and the judges. White needs to do something about this. Between this, the Hendricks v. GSP, and (IMO) the Gustafsson v. Jones this is ridiculous.

      Jon Jones beat Gus handily

Why not retired fighters for Judges?

    • Advance*

There are probably a lot of fighters that would be great judges but I don’t think it’s a guarantee. Just like not every retired athlete would be a good coach. Judging is its own skill.

      • Lucas Freire

It’s not a guarantee but it’s a huge step ahead IMO. Fighters have inside-octogon knowledge, what works, what doesn’t, what hit and rocks and what doesn’t…I think it’d be much better.
But ofc you won’t be putting Mayhem Miller as a judge. Or Diego Sanchez…
        Why not Lidell?

What about Diego? Oh, that’s right, he thought he won too.

I wasn’t being snarky, I just thought the idea of him judging after his reaction to the decision was funny.

  • BobGyro

That was disgusting, the crowd should have beaten the hell out of the judges in the parking lot, maybe having this happen a few times would make these judges look a little closer at the fight they are judging.

“I was going for the big finishes” …….I’m confused, aren’t you supposed to hurt the other guy first?!?
