Erick Silva-UFC on FX 3UFC Fight Night 36: Machida vs. Mousasi took place on Saturday night at Arena Jaragua in Jaragua do Sul, Brazil, with the fight card matching a UFC record of 10 bouts going to decision.

It also marked the first event under the promotion’s new bonus structure, which now awards one Fight of the Night bonus, but two Performance of the Night awards replacing the traditional Knockout and Submission of the Night awards.

In events past, Erick Silva and Charles Oliveira would have won the knockout and submission awards, respectively, but under the revamped format, they each scored a Performance of the Night bonus for the only two finishes on the 12-bout card.

Silva shook off memories of his loss to Dong Hyun Kim with a TKO stoppage of  Takenori Sato, while Oliveira finished Andy Ogle with a triangle choke.

The Fight of the Night honors went to the main event between Lyoto Machida and Gegard Mousasi, who fought a technical bout between two men know for having unorthodox approaches to the game, Machida more so than Mousasi.

Machida’s karate-based style won out with the Brazilian winning a unanimous decision.

Each post-fight award winner received a $50,000 bonus.

Really Machida and Mousassi FOTN??? I thought Ogle and Oliveira was a better fight, hell Joe Procter and Cris Marcello was better.

you are exactly right…guess they should change “fight of the night” name as well to “popularity contest fight”. Apparently UFC is taking notes from NBAs allstar selections. Performance is secondary to status.

It was worser than a sparring match. Literally at walking pace. They hardly did anything, just moves n faints. Shameful really. This is due to the rule set and u can tell fighters grinning out the round by just pinning their opponent on the mat or against the fence cos its judge on round. Its hard to watch. The ref just stood there letting it happen. No fotn. U cant give that just for the sake of it, plus no performance neither. Actually damn boring.

Ridiculous. That was one of the more boring fights Ive seen. Two others would have been better choices. Guess it is a popularity contest now. I woulda picked Ogle Oliveira- you know, one with actual contact. Seriously– if after three rounds neither has more than a tiny cut on the bridge of the nose– does that say either was really trying?

I liked Machida vs Mousasi for FOTN. Mousasi took some kicks to the jaw
that would have dropped most anyone else. It was a great fight in my
opinion. A good showcase of high level stand up with some groundwork
tossed in for flavor. Ogle-Oliviera looked very amateurish compared to the main event. Ogle, a durable fighter who showed much toughness and Oliviera looked to have more of a hard time putting Ogle away from his own technical problems than anything. It made for an entertaining fight but not FOTN.

So in effect what we are saying is that the new bonusstructure made no difference. The ko got an award, the sub got an award and the main event inexplicably gets FOTN. And the new structure didn’t seem to incentivise any other fighter to strive for the finish so why bother? The solution is simple: a fighter should get fight money, double it with a win bonus, treble it with a finish. And also don’t just cut fighters after a loss streak. If you come to fight but lose, so be it. The quality of the fight is more important than the result.

wow, they’re really banking on the idea that people stopped watching after rd 1 and only saw the 4 highlights of the marathon. silva and oliviera are the only ones who should be asking for steps up after last night.
