UFC Fight Night 26 Results: Chael Sonnen Makes Quick Work of Shogun, Calls Out Wanderlei Silva

Posted on by Ken Pishna

Chael SonnenHeading into his UFC Fight Night 26 showdown with Mauricio “Shogun” Rua on Saturday night in Boston, Chael Sonnen said he was expecting a long an unpleasant evening.

It was anything but.

Sonnen started quickly, immediately shooting across the Octagon to put Shogun on the mat, but the Brazilian brought the fight back up and then, surprisingly, planted Sonnen on the mat.

Sonnen, however, escaped to his feet, only to turn the tide again, clinching with Shogun and tripping the former UFC light heavyweight champion to the canvas. He smothered Shogun for the next few minutes, grounding and pounding him.

Just when it looked the round might play out that way, Shogun regained his feet again. This time, Sonnen managed a standing guillotine choke, felt that he had it sunk in, and dropped to the mat, tightening the hold.

Shogun tapped out at the 4:47 mark.

“Tonight’s fight is dedicated to (my grandma and my friend), who are in a battle much bigger than Shogun and I did tonight,” said Sonnen after the fight. “For anybody else who has had to go through cancer or anything like that, this is for you.”

Sonnen’s emotions ran the gambit, however, as he unleashed a bit of poetry and then zeroed in on another Brazilian fighter.

Sonnen had shown a tremendous amount of respect for Shogun leading up to their fight, but he reserved none when taking aim at his next bullseye.

Wanderlei Silva, six feet tall and 205 pounds, boy, until I met you, I didn’t know they could stack crap that high,” he declared.

“Wanderlei Silva, three months, you and the bad guy.”

way to go Chael. Great Win

    • BobGyro

Chael is a class C fighter when compared to Jon Jones just a prelim guy.

    • lowlb

you like him because he’s popular

  • Double K

great promo at the end to wanderlei.

  • David

    Wanderlei will f*** up Chael!!!!!!

    • Agent119

Or as Wandy would say “I want to **** Chael”

    • Agent119

Or as Wandy would say “I want to f*** Chael”

    • taylor2008

Ummmm…no. Silva isnt going to have a chance.

  • julian moran

reminds me of the Ortiz, Bader fight.

    • Baller31

Agreed, another fight where a much better fighter got caught

      • Werdoomb

        not really.

It’s funny listening to doomb arses talk about MMA. Even those that train in MMA or that have watched MMA since the early days make dooomb comments because of their poor intelligence.

    • Werdoomb

that sounds doomb. That’s like saying it reminded me of Cain vs Valesquez where an American fighter beat a Brazilian fighter.

Ortiz “caught” Bader with a punch and then submitted him. Sonnen took Shogun down, controlled him on the ground, wore him out, and then took Shogun’s neck when he was trying to stand up. Completely different fights. The former has much more elements of luck than the latter.

      Jesus. Doomb arse.

      • julian moran

        Thank you for your insight.
This fight reminded me of the Ortiz/Bader fight in that, the better fighter lost in a very unexpected manner.

  • David

    Wanderlei will beat Chael!!!

    • lowlb

no dude chael calls out people/legends he can beat. How ’bout a Chael Maia rematch? Looks like he is practicing his jj.

      • Maddawgmar

Maia fights at 170 now. He called out Jon Jones and Silva. That doesn’t sound like calling out easy fights.

      • Gary Fredericks

I hear ya. Anderson Silva, Shogun, Jon Jones, Wanderlei Silva….Man, those are all super easy fights…..

        • lowlb

He lost twice to AS, lost to JJ, and hasn’t fought Wanderlei Silva. (?) You just like the popular guy. And yes maddawgmar Maia’s at 170 but Chael seems to get whatever he wants these days. He makes a few people a lot of money.

    • Baller31

Wand has trouble with strong wrestlers. Even Tito beat him when wand was in his prime. Not a hard fight fight for sonnen.

      • David

Tito beat Wanderlei before his prime. And it taught Wanderlei alot. Ever since then he has been able to go against top contenders. And Wanderlei trains with Maia. No one realizes how good Wanderlei is on the ground, but just because he never takes it to the ground doesn’t mean he’s not good. If he fights chael Wanderlei will likely win via sub.

  • lowlb

    Chael is a total poseur.

    • Gary Fredericks

      He tapped Shogun.

      • lowlb

It was impressive. I admit. I can’t believe Shogun didn’t expect Chael to shot at him. Shogun trained with F. Roach..(?) He should have been (more) ready for a wrestler.

  • Gary Fredericks

Show-none used to be a great great fighter. HIs time at the top tier is long passed. He fought like total crap and was petering out early like he has in 75% of his UFC showings. Im glad Chael sunk in the guillitine as it was obvious Show-none was out of cardio. THat fight would have been horrible had he held out until round two. Show-none is and has not been a UFC level fighter for some time now. He needs to retire before totally killing the very respectable and great legacy he has built from a long and storied career, or he will just end up like Big Nog or Frank Mir….a gatekeeper holding on today to what they accomplished yesterday.

    • toom

you may be eight but the guy lost a close fight to hendo then dropped 2 fights I think it may be a little premature to call him sho none

      • Gary Fredericks

Maybe Show-Sometimes would be better, but it doesn’t rhyme as well.

    • Baller31

Shogun got caught. It happens. If they fought 5 more times, likely shogun would win every time.

      • Advance*

I don’t agree with the other guy saying how bad Shogun is, but Chael was winning that round and got the take downs pretty easily. Shogun isn’t known for his cardio so it likely would have been more of the same for the rest of the fight. It’s pretty ridiculous to say Shogun would win every time

        • Gary Fredericks

I am not saying Shogun is a “bad” fighter by any means. I am saying he is not what he used to be. It seems he rarely shows up for his UFC era fights.

Chael Sonnnen tapped him out. It looked like Shogun was gassing out and holding his head right there for Chael to snatch on to.

          • marcus miles

I guess calling him show-none is a cute means of indearment?

          • Gary Fredericks

Calling it what it is. He lost. But if I need to spell it out, he doesn’t bring the same fire to his UFC era fights as he did in Pride.

He’s 5-6 in the UFC and his losses were to people he “should” have beat. His wins, aside Machida, were against an up and comer, has beens, and those on their way out of MMA. Please show me more than the two UFC fights the REAL Shogun showed up. All I have seen him show up for is Henderson and Machida. You could say Liddell too I guess, but Chuck’s chin was smoked already by then and was just a name for his record.

        • Baller31

I don’t think so. I can see shogun ko’ing sonnen, or even submitting him. I like sonnen, I just think shogun is overall a much better fighter, and happened to get caught.

      • Scott

Getting caught is when it’s a decent fight and one guy just happens to sneak in a solid strike, or get caught in a bad position that leads to a submission.
When you get dominated for the entire round, gas out towards the end, and then get choked out, you didn’t get caught, you got beat.

        • Baller31

When sonnen lays on top he does no damage whatsoever, so it’s hard to say dominated, especially since shogun had an escape and a takedown,
Regardless, I think shogun is much better than wand, and sonnen should dominate wand.

  • Maddawgmar

Didn’t Vitor say that a fight with Sonnen didn’t make sense? And now that he destroyed Rua he wants him? I think first go and fight Wanderlei, and if he wins then go after Vitor. That way if Sonnen wins both fights he puts himself right up there at one last title shot. I think that a fight with Wanderlei plays out the same. Maybe not a sub but taking him down and beating him up. Vitor maybe not.

  • james j

I am guessing everybody who is not Brazilian loves Chael.

  • BobGyro

    How good is Jon Jones?

    • Agent119

      Post relevance: Very Low

  • BobGyro

Jon Jones manhandled Chael like a 4 year old child. Jones is great obviously. Chael is just good.

  • BobGyro

Jon Jones manhandled and embarrassed big mouth Chael. Chael is a class C fighter nothing more

  • BobGyro

On what level is Jon Jones then? Chael looked like a girl against Jones in his humiliating beatdown submission?

  • Hugh Shakeshaft

Too bad Uncle Chael can’t drop to 170. Probably not realistic. I can’t see him ever putting the strap on at 205 so why bother remaining in the weight class. I think GSP would have an awful time with him.
