As the UFC Fan Expo in Boston fast approaches, the promotion has added four grappling superfights to the weekend’s festivities that will see a former UFC lightweight contender return to the mats, as well as two members of the famed Gracie family compete in grappling matches.
Hermes Franca, a former WEC lightweight champion and UFC lightweight contender, who recently retired from active mixed martial arts competition hasn’t walked away from his love of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. The Brazilian will face Grappler’s Quest champion Ryan Hall in a grappling bout on Friday, August 27.
On that same day, Penny Thomas will take on Team Lloyd Irvin member Tracey Goodell in a women’s grappling match as well.
On Saturday, August 28, the Gracie’s will represent the first family of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as former UFC fighter Rolles Gracie takes on Roberto Abreu, while Renzo Gracie prodigy Gregor Gracie faces a very stiff test in Abu Dhabi world champion Pablo Popovitch.
“The superfights in Boston give fans the chance to see some of the best grapplers in the world,” UFC president Dana White said about the event. “With the Gracies, as well as the other competitors, we’ve got eight of the best grapplers in the sport. These are can’t-miss superfights for fans.”
The bouts will be first come, first serve seating, but fans attending the Expo will have access to the matches at no additional cost as part of the UFC Fan Expo experience.
