Luke Rockhold - StrikeforceThe middleweight division is going through more than a few changes lately with some of the top contenders losing and new challengers emerging at the top.

One familiar face that planted himself back in the race was former UFC champion Vitor Belfort, who took care of Michael Bisping in dramatic fashion earlier this month with a head kick knockout at UFC on FX 7.

While Belfort is still likely a couple of fights away from possibly earning a rematch with champion Anderson Silva, he can still climb the ladder by beating other top contenders along the way.

The fighter most likely to find himself standing across the Octagon from Belfort next is former Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold.

No contracts have been signed and no deal is done, but UFC president Dana White confirmed on Thursday that a Belfort vs. Rockhold fight is being targeted for a future date if everybody gets on the same page.

“(Luke) Rockhold maybe, I think that’s it. That’s who we’re talking about,” White responded when asked about Vitor Belfort’s next opponent.

Now, White reiterated that the fight is not signed and this is in no way a formal announcement, but as of right now that’s the middleweight bout they hope to put together in the coming weeks.

Luke Rockhold comes to the UFC after an impressive run through the Strikeforce middleweight division where he picked up wins over names such as Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Tim Kennedy and Keith Jardine.

Rockhold has long sought to face the best of the best in the UFC, and if Vitor Belfort is indeed his first test, he’ll certainly get his wish.

If Silva is signing a 10 fight contract is it to fight GSP 10 times? It seems no one is good enough to fight him.

Rockhold, I’m sorry to tell you that you will be separated from consciousness in that fight,

I prefer Vitor x Jones. Vitor deserves more time for preparation.

i think it should be vitor v weidman and the winner gets a shot at anderson.but if vitor wins this fight he should get another shot imo

  • I’m just wondering who is going to be fighting Weidman. That guy needs a top fight to make himself the clear #1 contender. Vitor would have been a great match for him.

      Lombard or Bisping??

      • I love both. Lombard I am a very big fan of. He has fought all over the world, and with his judo back round he deserves more respect. He comes from ATT and has an incredible record. He’s fighting Okami though. But if he beats Okami he should fight Weidman and winner should get a title shot. A win over Bisping would be huge though. But I like Vitor vs Weidman a lot. Who do you have in mind?

Thank god this is the fight they are targeting.

I was really afraid they would toss Rockhold in a champ vs champ fight right away since in a recent article with Anderson’s manager he stated that Rockhold was their preference for next fight. Now we will see if he is truly a contender or a pretender. If he takes out Vitor, then he deserves that title fight.

I wonder what this means for Anderson’s next fight then? They must be banking on “Suga” to beat “Little Nog” and drop down to 185. Either that or they are going to give it to Weidman, which I highly doubt.

So now Belfort is the gatekeeper? He’s gonna take this kids head off. Weidman vs Belfort would have been better.
