Zuffa recently acquired Strikeforce, putting most of the world’s top MMA talent under the umbrella that already includes the industry’s juggernaut.
Fans immediately salivated at the prospect of UFC champion vs. Strikeforce champion. Frankie Edgar fighting Gilbert Melendez? Oh yeah. Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz? Fans want that fight.
But so far, such fights haven’t materialized. Zuffa is instituting several changes in the business structure of Strikeforce, but as of yet, the promotion has been kept separate from the UFC. That hasn’t stopped the belief that pitting Strikeforce’s best against the UFC’s best is going to eventually happen… especially among UFC champions.
UFC champions Frankie Edgar, Anderson Silva, Jon Jones, and Cain Velasquez, at the recent Super 7 question and answer session in Toronto, weighed in on the topic, all of them looking forward to fighting the best Strikeforce has to offer.
