UFC 88 features nine
bouts – Karo Parisyan versus Yoshiyuki Yoshida was dropped at the last
minute due to a reported injury to Parisyan – and is headlined by two of the
top contenders in the Ultimate Fighting Championship 205-pound ranks, Chuck
Liddell and Rashad Evans.
Losing his light
heavyweight title to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson early last year, Liddell scored
a three-round decision over Wanderlei Silva in December and needs a win over
Evans to continue his rush back into title contention.
As Liddell is
making his way into the twilight years of his career, Evans is at the opposite
end of the spectrum. Having won the second season of The Ultimate Fighter and
sporting an undefeated professional record, Liddell is the most high-profile
opponent that he has ever faced. A win over “The Iceman” launches Evans to the
top of the light heavyweight ladder on the cusp of a title shot of his own.
In other action at
UFC 88, Rich Franklin, running into a middleweight roadblock named Anderson
Silva, returns to the 205-pound division to face Ultimate Fighter alumnus Matt
Hamill. Nate Marquardt and Martin Kampmann jockey for position in the queue to
challenge Silva for his UFC gold. Dan Henderson works to retain his position as
a contender in the middleweight division, while his opponent, Rousimar
Palhares, looks to take Henderson’s place in line for a title shot.
