VEGAS – MMAWeekly was on location from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in
Las Vegas for UFC 79: Nemesis weigh-ins. All fighters made weight in one of the
most eventful weigh-ins in Ultimate Fighting Championship history.
Silva made his way to the scales showered in cheers from the crowd. He weighed
in at 205 pounds wearing a hat, tank-top and fight shorts. Liddell looked to be
in the excellent condition, tipping the scales at a lean 204 pounds.
the customary staredown, Silva flinched at Liddell, punking the former UFC
light heavyweight champion. Liddell responded by flipping Silva off, which
resulted in Silva having to be restrained by UFC personnel and event security.
St-Pierre and Matt Hughes both weighed in at 170 pounds for the main event
interim welterweight title bout. Each addressed the crowd after stepping off
Hughes said, "This is the biggest fight of my life," adding,
"The winner of this fight is the No. 1 welterweight in the world."
matter-of-factly commented, "My plan is to beat Hughes and go after Matt
Irvin and Luis Cane butted heads during the staredown forcing UFC president
Dana White to step between the light heavyweights.
Thierry Sokoudjou received a warm welcome from the crowd as he prepared to
weigh in for his UFC debut against undefeated Lyoto Machida.
expected fireworks out of Melvin Guillard and Rich Clementi, but their
staredown was relatively calm, possibly due to the fact that both were
"talked to" before they made their way to the stage.
