un-edited weigh-in video is up in MMAWeekly’s “Behind the Scenes” section

The weigh-ins for UFC 61 took place earlier today in Las Vegas, Nevada, and the most notable event was Tito Ortiz initially coming in over the weight limit.

The fight between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock is scheduled to be a light heavyweight fight, which means that it would have a 205-pound weight limit, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission has had a consistent policy for years that allows fighters to come in up to one pound over the weight limit as long as they’re competing in a non-title bout.

So, in the case of a 205-pound fight, the strict cut-off would be 205 pounds for a title fight, or 206 pounds for a non-title fight (as is the case with Ortiz vs. Shamrock).

Ken Shamrock stepped on to the scales first and weighed in at exactly 206 pounds, putting him within the limits of the NSAC’s regulations.  However, Tito Ortiz was very unhappy about this, making a big stink about it and pointing his finger at Shamrock and UFC president Dana White.  Ortiz was trying to insist that both fighters should have to weigh in at 205 pounds or less.

In an ironic turn of events, Tito Ortiz then stepped on to the scales and weighed in at 206.5 pounds, putting him over the enforced weight limit by a half-pound.  Ortiz took off his clothes and weighed in again, but was still unable to make 206 pounds.  At that point, Ortiz had to make the weight within a few hours, and he came back about 15 minutes later and finally did make weight.

The weigh-ins for the Heavyweight Title match between Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski were much less dramatic.  The 6’8″ Sylvia came in at 258.5 pounds, which is lighter than he usually is, while Arlovski weighed 234 pounds.

Other highlights from the weigh-ins included Yves Edwards stepping on to the scales with a candy bar as he weighed in at 154.5 pounds for his lightweight fight against Joe Stevenson, who weighed 155 pounds.  Edwards was even nice enough to hand one of the candy bars to Stevenson.

Also, the lightweight fight between Hermes Franca and Joe Jordan is now a welterweight fight, as Franca weighed in at 158.5 pounds and Jordan weighed in at 164 pounds.  Jordan stepped up as a last-minute replacement earlier this week when Franca’s original opponent, Roger Huerta, had to pull out of the event due to an injury suffered in training.
