Georges-St-Pierre-026-UFC-124-478x270Welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre made his UFC debut in 2004, and just two fights into his tenure, he was already being hailed by company president Dana White – who still had hair at the time! – as “the new breed of UFC fighters.”

Even St-Pierre had already set his aim high, proclaiming “soon I will be UFC world champion.”

In celebration of the UFC’s upcoming 20th Anniversary event, UFC 167, check out Georges St-Pierre following his UFC 48 victory over Jay Hieron.

He’s not very explosive these days is he. so much for being a ufc world champion

    • drew

the hate is strong in this one…it must be easy to criticize a fighter for their ability to win and forget their struggle to get there..but you just go ahead and hate it’s all good he’s getting paid anyways lol. let’s just say i love trolling the trolls

      • Dragon Kid

So what if he’s getting paid a boatload? It doesn’t change the fact he’s a boring champion that jabs & lays on ppl who doesn’t even try to finish fights anymore. Old school GSP would kick the current GSP’s ass in the stand up department!

        • Kris-tyahn

Apparently you don’t know much about MMa or striking. The only reason you would ASSume GSP of old would beat the GSP of today is b/c of who he fought back then & how he finished them. The GSP of today would murder the GSP of 2004/2005, footwork, head movement, speed & accuracy. FYI: The fact you think GSP is “boring” only proves one thing, you have no clue about MMA, but the fact that you think old GSP would kick GSP’s ass of today, only reinforces my argument…. you are a troll & lack the knowledge of MMA.
It’s funny how you Trolls/idiots say he just lays on top of people, aqnd then when he stands, you cry b/c he “only jabs”?!? Give me one fight where he only jabed, or 1 fight where he only layed on top of his opponent & didn’t attempt to pass guard, submissions or GnP?!? I’ll save you the time, b/c there isn’t one. That’s the diff between an “educated” MMA fan & a Troll/noob like you. If GSP fought close decisions, then I could possibly understand your point, but he DOMINATES World Class opponents & has been for the last 4-5 yrs, and he does it with ease! Won 30+ straight rounds, which spans 7 fights & 3 yrs, no other UFC Champ or fighter has come close to that stat! Not Aldo, Pettis, Silva, Jones or Cain.

          • Dragon Kid

apparently you’re the one who is clueless when it comes mma. if you actually find his matches entertaining now, then you’re quite delusional. laying on someone and jabbing them isn’t being dominant. its being repetitive and boring and doesn’t entertain people, maybe for nuthuggers with bad taste like yourself.

his fights with shields, condit, diaz and koscheck were all crap. he didn’t even attempt to finish a one eyed koscheck. he plays it safe nowadays, not explosive enough and doesn’t take risks no more. old school GSP would destroy current GSP.

          • Lucas Freire

            How it isn’t? lol
You call him repetitive and boring yet no one is able to exploit this common strategy.
I mean, these shouldn’t even be called world class fighters if they can’t stuff a takedown and counter attack a jab, right? Everyone’s strategy against him is: Get lucky and hit him with something that can KO him.
This is MMA. He’s the champion because he mix it up with near perfection.

          • Dragon Kid

Same can be said for Cain but least Cain tries to finish ppl. GSP wants fights to go to the judges

          • Austin, TX

Cain is also 1 fight into his “reign.” he just got knocked out by JDS last year. GSP is how may, 9,10 fights etc. You criticize him because he doesn’t provide you with nonstop video game fight fantasies night after night. This is called reality. And he is simply aging. You act like he should fulfill your personal defintion of everything time in and out (which he does frequently) else he’s boring. He must be doing something right, he’s the #1 ppv draw. Also he is about to break Silva’s record. he’s many people GOAT as well. Get a grip. You would like him better if he wasn’t French I suspect. Watch all is fights again. He’s a world class fighter, admit it. Go look at his record.

          • Dragon Kid

cain destroyed jds in both fights after. i’m guessing you didn’t see that coz ur a casual viewer who just can’t see the obvious … and don’t give me the aging excuse, gsp is in his prime and he just doesnt try to finish his opponents anymore not just because they’re world class fighters but because he’s become a points fighter who does the same thing in all his fights. look at silva, he’s almost 40 and can put on a good show along with putting away his opponents. as good as gsp may be, he doesn’t show enough aggression or take enough risks in his fights. he’s been one of the most boring champions in the last 4-5 years.

          • Austin, TX

There are probably a few hundred million people across the globe who would disagree with you I suspect.

ps: I’m not a casual viewer though watch ‘em all. And Silva fights nobodies frequently. GSP fights champions.

          • Dragon Kid

i’m sure you’re referring only to gsp fans. true mma fans will agree how boring gsp has become in recent years. he’s like the ben henderson of the welterweight division. only fights to win decisions instead of finishing fights. gsp fights champs, really?!? dan hardy isn’t a champ, nick diaz isnt a champ, thiago alves aint a champ, jake shields hasn’t looked like a champ since coming to ufc. silva has fought more well known names and looked more like a champ than georges-SAFE pierre.

          • MMAFAN

How exactly would you expect him to fight “champs” when he’s been the champ for the last 5 or so years? He’s not fighting “champs” because he is the champ. See how that works?

          • Austin, TX

Like I said, there are probably a few hundred million people who disagree with you. Like I said, GSP fights champs. He did nonstop starting out back in the day and still does when one comes along from another division. Example Condit, Shields. Check your calendar, man. Shields was middleweight champ, Condit welter weight champ in their organizations. WEC, Strikeforce etc.

          • Dragon Kid

gsp’s fights were a lot more exciting when he first started than he is now. stand up skills were excellent and he usually kept coming forward and knew how to (or tried to) finish. nowadays he’s just known for jabbing, takedowns, wrestling, lay on opponents and winning by points thru judges decision. its all too repetitive to watch after a while. one can only watch wrestling or jabbing for so long. he was met with negative criticism for stalling in the hardy and koscheck fights when he had many chances to finish. his fights are all too one sided but they lack excitement. out of the two guys you named, only condit seems do be doing well while shields fights are usually lackluster and not very exciting to watch because his fight style is boring and he does the same thing, similar to gsp.

          • Austin, TX

I understand. Well, its a free country almost still. Don’t watch his fights if you don’t like him. He’s still interesting to watch because he’s got it down to such an art form though for me personally. By the way. He is getting old for a fighter. He’s been at it a long, long time. His training camps take an immense amount out of his body and brain etc. I’ve read up on people talking about them and talking about him. Don’t watch him if you don’t like him, but he’s still one of the best if not the best fighter in the world. Maybe you’ll get your wish and see him get knocked out by Big Rig. But he still was one of and still is one of the best fighters on the globe. When people are really good at something they make it look simple and easy. He’s had one of the best runs in the UFC. Only Silva was longer by a fight or so. Thats about to get broken possibly. People like him. He’s got style. There is a certain French-ish kind of mystique. He’s an elder statesman in some ways. I’ve been to his hometown, Quebec City, Montreal etc. People there piss their pants over him….in the good way I mean.) (He went on record as saying that Weidman was going to beat Silva. He was one of the first if not the first person to say that.) He’s honest and respectful of the game. Unlike Silva. I don’t find it boring, but I respect your opinion if you do now days compared to GSP of old. (You’ve got to remember, he doesn’t like to lose. Plus he’s about to break the all time record if he holds on. )

          • Dragon Kid

its easy to tell someone not to watch but how can a die hard fight fan not watch it? its not just him fighting on the card in every fight? the main events/championship fight promos are usually hyped up well (including gsp’s) but when his fight comes on, he does the same thing every time and a lot of expectations are lowered because it doesnt generate enough excitement with the way he fights. while he is close to silva’s record, its debatable about how he’s about to do it since all his fights are the same whereas silva mixes it up, takes risks, gives a spectacular finish and overall exciting fight, whereas gsp doesnt. gsp is a good fighter but his fight is constantly repetitive and lacks certain things fans wanna see in a good fight.

          • Rezsurfer

If your talking GSP fans as just nut huggers he is the top PPV revenue fighter, you know that right? he sells the most PPV… so your logic of he is boring and real mma fans dont like him is ignorance

          • Dragon Kid

when was the last time he had an exciting fight? when’s the last time he finished a guy off with a knockout or submission? the guy has become a points fighter and you know it. doing the same thing in all his fights don’t make them exciting.

          • The guest of guests

You’re an idiot. Let’s throw you into the cage with GSP nd I bet he gets a finish in the first 10 seconds. Don’t forget he’s had some tough opponents as of late that are difficult to finish, granted he could have put away a couple. Koscheck and Hardy both ran their mouths before the fight, who’s to say that he just wanted to punish them all 5 rounds instead of finish them? Fitch was outhumped and Shields had good enough BJJ to keep GSP at bay off his back. I like GSP but I’ve been watchin Johny Hendricks since he was 5-0 nd predicted him making his way to Georges. If it makes it to the 4th rd, GSP by UD. If Johny comes out VERY aggressive and has his TDD in check, he may surprise him and get an early finish.

          • Dragon Kid

You’re full of s**t. You’re just another GSP nuthugger who can’t accept the truth.

          • Lucas Freire

The difference is Cain is a 220 pounder xP
Of course GSP on 170 packs a punch, but most of his opponents are nigh-unfinishable.
It’s like questioning Cain’s power for not KOing Cigano.
Or Cigano not KOing Nelson, some guys are simply too tough.
Other thing we can’t forget is how every opponent he faces has a very technical approach. On HW most of the guys always go to the brawl, looking for the KO. I’d say by far the WW/LW have the most tactical fighters. Because of course it’s great to get a KO, but the level of the common fighter in the UFC is rising by a lot, there’s no space for someone that can’t go 3/5 rounds or that gas on the first/second because they went for the kill since the first minute.

          • Dragon Kid

it doesn’t matter the size difference, cain is 240lbs and still able to smash guys bigger than him. his victories over jds cannot be questioned when u look at the amount of damage he did to him in both fights, same thing with jds vs nelson and carwin (one sided fights with nelson and carwin taking most of the damage). how much damage did gsp inflict on diaz, condit and shields? not much. all he did was lay on them or jab with them. well in the case of jake shields, gsp stood with him but the fight was still very lackluster and gsp’s stand up was average at best. the gsp who use to stand and trade always looked to finish but now he doesn’t go in with the same approach or mentality, he doesn’t even try to finish.

          • toom

Listen to yourself you say it’s being repetitive he does it to everyone they know it’s coming and they still can’t stop it gsp is the man

          • Dragon Kid

Being a points fighter doesn’t make him the man. Btw, I didn’t see him jab or lay on Matt Hughes to win their trilogy, he actually tried to finish him. Something he just doesn’t do nowadays to his opponents.

          • Rezsurfer

a great, smart athlete in any sport will never allow the opponent to use there best weapon, and disable it and use theres. GSP has done that better then any other fighter ever. He learned his lesson in them Hughes fights dont just go blow for blow, you stop there main weapon and use yours. Hendricks is throwing bombs and knuckle up so why in the hell would GSP do that back??? he can not fight that way so take hendricks down and out wrestle him.. thats called smarts…

          • Dragon Kid

a great smart athlete would know how to mix it up and not do the same thing in their fights but gsp fights are basically all the same now. it may work for him but they don’t exactly generate excitement or aggression if its constantly a one sided battle mostly made up of jabbing, wrestling and laying on someone for multiple rounds. the difference between him and the other weight division champions is that they constantly try to finish whereas gsp doesn’t even try at all.

          • TrentSki

            You are a noob

    • toom

clearly you don’t know what the word explosive means

  • Scotty_O

GSP looks the exact same, haha andDana white looks like a little twerp. Funny how money and fame can change some people so much while others can stay basically the exact same.

  • sanshiro

GSP is awesome fighter for sure
and one of the best of all the time

  • talkingshitbecauseican

its funny how ronda lousey calls gsp boring for “laying down on his opponents and beating their face in” when all she does is arm bars.. such a bitchy hypocrite

    • Dragon Kid

well, getting someone armbarred in the first round is more impressive than laying on someone for 5 full rounds and not finishing them.
