The UFC returns to Brazil this week for its most monumental event ever in South America. UFC 198: Werdum vs. Miocic takes place at Arena da Baixada, a stadium that will be filled with more than 45,000 fans come fight time.
Not only is fight night a blockbuster for the UFC, but so was Friday’s weigh-in in Curitiba, estimated to have drawn more than 20,000 people, making it the promotion’s highest attended weigh-in in history.
The card took a few hits along the way – most notably the loss of Anderson Silva – but is still stacked with many of Brazil’s best leading the charge.
There’s little to no drop-off in the co-main event, as Brazilian middleweights and top contenders Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Vitor Belfort square off after each made weight on Friday. Neither fighter had trouble hitting the mark.
One of the fights garnering the most attention, however, is the Octagon debut of Cris “Cyborg” Santos, who relieved a lot of tension at the weigh-in when she easily made weight for her 140-pound catchweight bout with Leslie Smith. Both ladies weighed in at 139 pound.
