It’s been a long time since UFC 183 main event fighters Anderson Silva and Nick Diaz have set foot in the Octagon. They both got another step closer on Friday, as they and the rest of the UFC 183 roster stepped on the scale at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, making their fights official.

Considered one of the greatest fighters of all time, Anderson Silva spent the entirety of 2014 nursing the severely broken leg that he suffered in his loss to Chris Weidman at UF C 168 in December of 2013. He’s now back to full speed and looking to prove it against one of the more rugged fighters to ever strap on gloves and step into a cage.

Anderson Silva vs. Nick DiazIt is actually closer to two years that Nick Diaz has spent outside of the Octagon, but his was a self-imposed exile, having semi-retired, while awaiting a big enough temptation. Challenging himself against a fighter that he truly respects proved to be all the motivation that Diaz needed to return to the fight game.

“I’m here to fight the best there is. I want to thank everyone for standing by me. I’m taking on the world here one fight at a time,” said Diaz after stepping off the scale.

Silva was just happy to be back doing what he loves to do.

“I’m so happy because one year, I broke my leg. When I talk to my family, my family say, dad, no more for fight, done,” he said. “But this is me, this is my life.”

The  UFC 183 fight card was also expected to feature a  pivotal welterweight contenders match between Tyron Woodley and Kelvin Gastelum, as well as a women’s bantamweight match-up pitting Miesha Tate against Sara McMann, and Ian McCall vs. John Lineker in a flyweight showdown.

The ladies easily made weight, but the guys… not so much.

Gastelum was nine pounds over the 171-pound limit for the welterweight contest, and did not attempt to cut any additional weight. He and Woodley were reportedly still in negotiations at the time of the weigh-in, but there was a strong likelihood that the fight would not happen.

Linker, however, has struggled to make weight on several occasions, and this was no different. He weighed in a full four pounds over the 126-pound limit for the flyweight tilt, and chose to be penalized instead of trying to make weight.

McCall was none too happy, jawing at Lineker when they faced off after stepping off the scales.
