UFC 169 Weigh-in Results: Two Title Fights Officially Set

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

Urijah Faber vs Renan Barao - UFC 149

The Ultimate Fighting Champ, at the behest of its television partners at FOX, moved its annual Super Bowl Weekend from Las Vegas to Newark, N.J. to coincide with the Super Bowl, which airs on FOX this year. They also loaded up the UFC 169 fight card with two title fights and a pivotal heavyweight bout.

Renan Barão puts his newly unified bantamweight belt on the line in a main event rematch against Urijah Faber, the man he defeated for the interim belt at UFC 149 in 2012. Barão has defended his belt a couple time, while Faber went on a four-fight tear to get back into title contention.

“The difference is I’m going to win this time,” said Faber after stepping on the scales.  ”I’m ready for a war, a real war.  And I’m going to do anything in my power to make this happen.”

“I hope to knock him out.  I’m here to fight one of the best in the world, and I’m here to win,” said Barao.

In the co-main event, Barão’s teammate, Jose Aldo, puts his featherweight belt on the line against Ricardo Lamas. Lamas has been waiting a year for his shot at the belt, while Aldo has defeated Frankie Edgar and Chan Sung Jung during the time that Lamas has sat idle.

A key heavyweight bout on the card puts the UFC tenures of Frank Mir and Alistair Overeem on the line. Both have been underperforming lately, leaving UFC president Dana White saying that – while not necessarily a loser-leaves-town fight – both men “need to perform on Saturday” if they are to remain on the roster.

UFC 169: Barão vs. Faber takes place Saturday, Feb. 1, at The Prudential Center, but first, on Friday, the fighters had to step on the scale and make weight.
