Josh Barnett StrikeforceThe UFC likes to make a big deal of its traditional year-end show and UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva II is no different.

UFC 168 already features two milestone rematches in Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva for the middleweight title, and women’s champ Ronda Rousey putting her belt on the line against Miesha Tate.

The UFC has now added a heavyweight showcase between former UFC champion Josh Barnett and rising contender Travis Browne to the Dec. 28 fight card in Las Vegas. UFC officials on Tuesday confirmed the bout first reported by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Barnett (33-6) recently won his return bout to the Octagon, knocking out Frank Mir at UFC 164 in Milwaukee. That gave Barnett his tenth victory in his last 11 bouts. The lone black mark during that stretch was a unanimous decision loss to Daniel Cormier in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix final.

The victory over Mir immediately threw Barnett back into the mix at the top of the UFC heavyweight division, but he’ll have to find his way past a hungry young buck at UFC 168.

Browne (15-1-1) enters the fight coming off of back-to-back knockouts of Alistair Overeem and Gabriel Gonzaga, two former UFC heavyweight title contenders. His only career slips were a TKO stoppage at the hands of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and a draw with Cheick Kongo.

Browne has been steadily rising up the division, but a victory over Barnett would catapult him right into the thick of title talk, as well.

  • This is a good fight too, but I wonder what happened with Miocic

    • shakejunt

don’t think it was ever official. i think this match makes more sense anyway, it sets one of them up for a #1 contender’s match or maybe a title shot depending how the timing works out.

i’d like to see them book stipe against big ben. i know it’s a step back from roy, but he’s gotta build his streak back up anyway and the only other option i see is big nog maybe?

      • Jay Mcgarrity

Stipe deserves a bigger named guy than ben but I guess everyone in the top 10 is pretty much tied up so there aren’t a ton of options. If I were Miocic I would just stay ready and if anyone falls out of a fight be the first one to jump in for the spot. I thought we would end up seeing Bigfoot vs Miocic but I guess it’s Bigfoot vs Hunt.

        • shakejunt

it’s hard because he deserves someone coming off a win. ben is really the only guy available unless you wanna throw him winner of jordan/gonzaga, but that that’s an even bigger step back.

      • JDMMA

forgetting Werdum??? he’s been sitting & waiting for the winner of Cain/JDS

        • shakejunt

nah. hence why i said #1 contender fight or title shot. all depends on timing/injuries

    • Dragon Kid

maybe Stipe Miocic vs. Ben Rothwell next?

      • solo

Maybe, i would liked it. And it makes sense. If Stipe cant get top 10 guy, at least give him a fighter whos coming with a good win from last fight.

  • Kenny powers

I was hoping for a Barnett/Werdum #1 contenders match, but this is a good fight too. Im guessing that Fabricio will get the next title shot and Barnet/Browne will be for the next title shot after that, since DC is dropping down to 205, and everyone else at HW is coming off losses

    • JDMMA

Werdum doesn’t want to fight anyone except for the title

      • TheCerealKiller

If Travis wouldn’t have pull his hammy right at the beginning of the Bigfoot fight, he’d still be undefeated.

  • TheCerealKiller

I love this fight! Travis smashes the PRIDE Roidmaster!

    • Cptmats

      LOL, Barnett by sub !

  • mike

I predicted this fight after Barnett went through Mir. I’d like to see Travis Browne take it as I am not at all a fan of Josh, but I fear this will not be the case.
Would like to see Antonio Silva take Barnett next.

    • Kenny powers

Nah i dont see that happening. Bigfoots fighting Hunt already but even with that, i dont think Silvas a top level fighter. He really just got lucky against Overeem and Browne. Overeem was destroying him and just got cocky and Browne injured himself. He’s too slow with just heavy hands and i think Hunt will KO him, and Barnett would tap him easily.

  • solo

Im not a fan of Barnett, but he was impressive against Mir i gotta say. This is a good match-up for him,at least on paper. I hope Travis lands another front kick KO.

winner of this fight deserve the title-shot way more than Werdum (who fought 2 low ranking fighters and washed up Nogueira)

  • Ray Lane

People keep talking about this fight as a big deal. I think Barnett flattens him. Browne is good and not great. If Reem had any tank at all, Browne would have been killed, and was being killed. If Gonzaga didn’t leave his head open for strange, lucky elbows, he was pushing Browne around as well.

    • deepgrim

agree that reem could/ should have followed thru to win that fight, but to say landing elbows repeatily against gonzaga was lucky sounds ridiculous. when you throw a techinque and it lands that is not luck that is skill.
