Robbie-Lawler-005-SF-478x270Robbie Lawler and Rory MacDonald both gave everything they had at UFC 167 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night, but it was to be Lawler’s night.

In a clash of stand-up styles, Lawler went for broke, searching for the knockout from bell to bell, while MacDonald worked to employ his jab and leg kicks to chop away at his elder.

Lawler seemed to edge ahead in the first round, landing more frequently than MacDonald, even though it was MacDonald that seemed to move the fight around the cage. He just couldn’t seem to land much on Lawler.

MacDonald took the second stanza, pecking away with his jab and kicks until he landed a takedown in the latter portion of the round. He didn’t do a lot of damage on the ground, but he did control the fight and land a few shots, racking up points.

Lawler stormed back in the final round, dropping MacDonald and nearly finishing him. Try as he might, Lawler amassed damage, but couldn’t put MacDonald away. After returning to their feet, MacDonald somewhere found the energy late in the round to score a takedown and drop elbows on Lawler until the final horn.

It was a close fight, which was reflected in the judges’ split decision victory for Lawler.

“He’s in shape and he trains with the best, so I was expecting 15 minutes,” said Lawler after the fight, giving a nod to his experience for being able to push on and edge ahead in the fight.

“I’ve had a tough road, up and down, but I kept pushing forward and that’s what happened tonight.”

Lawler = Mr. Bad Ass. Guy is damn good.

LOL I’m so glad Rory got his ass handed to him. He needs to stop trying to be a psycho, stare and do nothing. He needs to get to work, but I guess he’s all worried about he looks that he’s not really fighting anymore. Next GSP? Please, that kid could not fill in GSP’s shoes, they will always fit too big for him. Moron!

GSP can’t fill his own shoes after that beating Hendricks laid on him

Good win for Lawler.Love fighters that actually try to finish.

was thinking when the decision was coming out they were going to screw lawlor over. not sure how a judge was giving the first round to mc donald- its a joke. so much talk about mc donald but his last 2 fights have been shocking

    • El Gvapo

They left the screwing to the main event

      • deepgrim

maybe the judges had a bit of money on a gsp decision before the fight. its what i thought was going to happen!

  • candelario

lawler came to fight.. macdonald come to outpoint… lawler beat him in both

  • El Gvapo

So Rory has been waiting for his landlord to lose/retire and it finally happens and he gets his arse handed to him by Lawler. Can’t get the feeling out of my head that he was overlooking Lawler a bit.
