Chael Sonnen and Jon JonesThe UFC 159: Jones vs. Sonnen weigh-ins took place Friday afternoon at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., setting the stage for Saturday’s showdown between Ultimate Fighter 17 coaches Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen.

Despite some people questioning whether or not Sonnen deserves a shot at Jones’ UFC light heavyweight championship, it’s a moot point now, as both Jones and Sonnen made weight, making their title fight official.

Neither had trouble making weight, each man stepping on the scale at 205 pounds.

Where they differed was in their post-weigh-in comments.

Sonnen, as always, took the opportunity to wax poetic from his self-promotional soapbox.

“You’re gonna tell your kids’ kids’ kids that he was real. He existed,” proclaimed Sonnen. “The myth of Chael Sonnen stood before us. He brought down the hometown hero and when it was all said and done, it was one more in the record books, one more in the win column and one more for the bad guy.”

Jones in stark contrast kept his comments short and simple, the confidence of a champion speaking far louder than his words.

“I’m here to conquer. I’m here to be courageous. That’s about it.”

Nick Catone, who faces James Head on the Facebook preliminary bout portion of the fight card, tipped the scale at 173 pounds. He did not attempt to come down any further. The fight will still take place, but Catone was fined 20-percent of his fight purse.

      No upset picks?

      • Lucas Freire

Like picking Garcia on the winning side? haha

Other than Phil vs Vinny I have the same picks. I’d like Belcher to win against Bisping, but Belcher is pretty limited and, even though Bisping has pillowfists,he is able to take a punch.

        • PhranktheTank

It’s easy to pick the favourites, that’s why they are favourites. the challenge is picking the upsets.
I’ll take mckenzie by 1st rd mckenzitine
          Nick Catone over head
And Bedford over caraway… Don’t know how Bedford is the dog in that one.

I see a Belcher upset happening, I hope not though.

Sonnen Vs. Jones is a garbage as fight.

Jones should be fighting Silva. UFC needs to put on real fights. Sonnen is pure garbage with no skills. This match up is a joke!

    • candelario

I agree 50% This fight is pure BS. NOT because of Sonnen Skills he is legit 185 top ten. He shouldn’t have got a shot at the 205 title.

being that i follow mma very closely and do not know who yansy or rustam are (and being that a win doesnt put either of them in the top 15) Leonard Garcia and Mckenzie should be on FX … Yes, Garcia is 2-5 in his last 7 fights and really lost 6 (ironic one of the 5 is the fight he won), all of them were competitive, and people like LG and goofballs like CM are why MMA is where it is now. I wanna see LG fight a perfect technical standup fight and take Cody down iatleast once in all 3 rounds, and hope he can finish 1 or 2, but definitely 3 in top control. 30-27 across the board so he has a lil wiggle room to bang with the next “banger” he is matched against. I don’t want him cut especially since he has the tools to be a top 20 fighter, he just doesn’t use them in order to put on a show.

Leonard Garcia? Technical? Takedowns? Garcia is a brawler, a very entertaining brawler with no quit, but a brawler. In addition, the best chance he has of losing this fight is going for the takedown and giving his neck to cody.
