It was Lawler – making his return to the Octagon after more than eight years away – that put his stamp on the fight, finishing Koscheck in the opening round.
Making his 22nd appearance in the Octagon, Koscheck took control of the fight early, taking Lawler to the mat and working his ground and pound. Lawler returned to his feet a couple of times, but each time, Koscheck put him back on the mat.
Lawler got out from under Koscheck for the final time just under four minutes into the round. Standing up while Koscheck was on all-fours, Lawler unloaded some heavy punches that forced Koscheck to his back. He didn’t relent until referee Herb Dean stepped in and called a halt to the fight.
Koscheck took some heavy blows, but had his hands up and was trying to defend, but his protest fell on deaf ears, Robbie Lawler walking out of the Octagon with a victory in his homecoming.
