Jose Aldo vs Erik KochThe Ultimate Fighting Championship on Monday made UFC 149: Aldo vs. Koch official for the promotions July 21 debut in Calgary.

UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo will defend his belt against Erik Koch in the main event.

Aldo (21-1) has defended his belt five times since winning it while in the WEC. He also hasn’t lost a fight in six-and-a-half years, which amounts to 14 consecutive victories.

Aldo last fought on his home turf in Brazil in January, where he easily handled then-No. 1 contender Chad Mendes, knocking him out in the final moment of the first round.

The only loss to mar Koch’s 13-1 professional record is to Mendes, while both were still in the WEC. Koch has since reeled off four consecutive victories, including a win over The Ultimate Fighter Season 12 winner Johnathan Brookins last September.

The UFC 149 fight card will also feature former light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua squaring off with Thiago Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira facing Cheick Kongo, Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Thiago Alves, and a middleweight showdown between Michael Bisping and Tim Boetsch.

Five Canadians will also step into the Octagon on July 21 as Edmonton’s Mitch Clarke faces lightweight Anton Kuivanen; Calgary’s Nick Ring battles middleweight Court McGee; Sudbury, Ontario’s Mitch Gagnon takes on bantamweight Bryan Caraway; Oshawa, Ontario native Antonio Carvalho will challenge featherweight George Roop; and Saint John, New Brunswick’s Ryan Jimmo meets light heavyweight Anthony Perosh.

They really need to put the boetsch fight back to spice up the now Cruz-less card.

I wonder why they aren’t giving this fight to Poirier. Both Koch and Poireir have good, solid records, but I think the fact that Koch’s only loss is to the guy Aldo just beat silly makes the bout a little less compelling.

I wonder if Poirier didn’t want the fight. I thought I heard somewhere that he said he himself wasn’t ready for Aldo, but I doubt he’d turn it down given the opportunity. I think Poirier deserves it just a bit more.

Yeah I think poirer deserved it more than Koch, but even more than porier u got a guy named yuri alcantara Who won like 19 of his last 20 and is on a 13 fight win streak and u also hatsu hioki who won like 15 of his last 16 on a 6 fight streak. I think they’re tryin to give Aldo sum lesser competition even tho I think he’d beat these guys anyway

        Alcantara is a decent option.

I would have to disagree on the Hioki recommendation. He’s off to a pretty slow start. His win over Palaszewski was legit, but a split to Roop. Blah

  • UFC 149 has rounded out nicely considering they were scrambling for a headliner. The card is pretty stacked now that Bisping and Boetsch are also on the card. I was hoping it would have been shogun vs machida 3 but I think that fight will happen some time in the future.

Kotch is going to get KO’d silly.

  • Koch is under the radar, I have seen at Duke’s camp and he may surprise a few people. However Aldo is P4P one of the best and seems intouchable in Brasil.
