Those were the words that UFC president Dana White spoke as he handed a tearful Rony Jason the familiar glass trophy presented to TUF winners. Jason became the first ever winner of TUF Brazil.
Jason and Godofredo Pepey went the distance in their TUF Brazil featherweight final, but it was Jason that held his composure throughout the fight, sticking to what he does best, hanging back and countering the wild antics of Pepey.
For his part, Pepey was doing well in the fight, but every time he got any momentum going, he would pull guard. That wouldn’t have been so bad for him had he been more aggressive when they hit the mat, but Pepey didn’t immediately go for attacks, often allowing Jason time to slip out and back to his feet.
The most telling point in the fight was in the opening moments of round three when Pepey came rushing in, swinging wildly, and Jason caught him with a right hand that knocked Pepey to a knee momentarily, leaving him to gather his senses.
He did, and seemed to get things going with a high kick, but then stalled out when he landed two glancing low blows on Jason later in the round.
In the end, Jason’s cleaner, more accurate attacks swayed the judges to his favor, earning a unanimous decision victor to become Brazil’s first-ever Ultimate Fighter.
“It was a great honor for me,” said Jason after the fight. “I have been hungry many times and have slept without a home.”
That no longer is Rony Jason’s life. Rony Jason is now a professional fighter and a hero to millions in his home country.
