UFC 141 Video: Is Alexander Gustafsson the Next Jon Jones?

Posted on by MMAWeekly.com Staff

You may or may not agree, but after Alexander Gustafsson’s destruction of Vladimir Matyushenko at UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem on Friday night in Las Vegas, the young Swede is drawing numerous comparisons to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones.

Maybe he’s not quite there just yet, but after upping his record to 13-1 by knocking out one of the toughest and most well respected fighters in the 205- pound division, Gustafsson is showing that he is, at minimum, among the true contenders in one of the UFC’s marquee divisions.

so finishing matyushenko makes you jon jones?

  • bajafox

No, but finishing Matt Hamill and Matyushenko the same way Jones did is on the right track. Jones got an early shot because he beat Bader and the rest is history. It was all just perfect timing, if this guy had the same shot, who’s to say it wouldn’t be the same outcome? All he would have had to do was beat Bader and he would have had the same shot as Jones. This guy looks dangerous and there’s no reaso to deny that he might be fighting Jones for the belt by the end of 2012.

Yep, this dude is coming for Jone’s belt. Not Shogun nor Hendo, old school won’t cut it. I see this guy about the only real competition out there, he just needs to get into a good camp that’s all & then start collecting bones.

Phil Davis is one up on him, but that’s it.

It’s really too early to tell, you know…UFC fighters are only as good as their last fight.. Look at Rousimar Palhares..or Demian Maia both were being hoped to defeat Anderson Silva, but both lost eventually to title contender Marquardt and their promise of defeating Silva lost into ashes.
