UFC 139 is now official with former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Dan Henderson returning to the Octagon to face former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua in the main event.
The announcement comes on the heels of the UFC 139 press conference slated to be held at 4pm ET in San Jose on Tuesday. The event takes place on Nov 19 in San Jose at the HP Pavilion.
Dan Henderson returns to the UFC after exiting the promotion for several fights when he signed an exclusive deal to fight under the Strikeforce banner.
During his time in the promotion, Henderson defeated former champion Rafael ‘Feijao’ Cavalcante to win the light heavyweight title, and then returned in July of this year to beat former Pride champion Fedor Emelianenko in a special heavyweight attraction.
Now Henderson comes back to the UFC with a chance to earn a shot at the light heavyweight title once again when he faces Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua.
“The UFC light heavyweight division is arguably the deepest division in the sport and Dan Henderson and ‘Shogun’ are fighting to prove that they deserve to be next in line for a shot at the title,” UFC President Dana White said. “Both of these guys want to earn the right to be called the best 205-pound fighter in the sport. These guys both have incredible power and I expect a great fight on Nov. 19.”
The event will also feature a co-main event bout between adopted San Jose son Cung Le making his UFC debut against former Pride legend Wanderlei Silva in a middleweight bout.
The other fights confirmed for the main card on the UFC 139 show include a bantamweight No. 1 contender’s bout between Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles, a welterweight fight pitting Rick Story against Martin Kampmann and Stephan Bonnar taking on local San Jose based fighter Kyle Kingsbury.
Tickets for the event that take place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose go on sale to UFC Fight Club members at 10am PT on Wednesday, Sept 28 with general ticket sales hitting the public at 10am PT on Friday Sept 30.
Tickets will be priced at $400, $300, $225, $150, $75 and $50 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster.com as well as the HP Pavilion box office.
