Martin Kampmann’s back was to the wall at Saturday night’s UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson in San Jose, Calif. Coming off back-to-back losses, he couldn’t afford a third strike by losing to Rick Story.

The “Hitman” came through.

Although he didn’t knock it out of the park, Kampmann overcame Story’s aggressive mix of boxing and wrestling to pull out a split decision victory. It wasn’t definitive, but it put Kampmann back on track.

The two went toe-to-toe throughout the fight. Story was throwing heavier shots, working over Kampmann’s body, but it was Kampmann’s technique that started to wear Story down as the fight wore on.

Kampmann kept amassing punches and stuffed nearly every takedown attempt Story could muster. In the waning moments of the final round, it was actually Kampmann that was outwrestling Story to come out ahead on two of the three judges’ scorecards.

And that’s all he needed to get back in the win column.
