One exception to the rule is Oli Thompson, who has so far amassed a 9-2-0 professional MMA record, picking up wins over former boxer Mark Potter and former UCMMA champion Ben Smith (from whom he took the belt), after making the transition from being Britain’s Strongest Man.
It appears that his combination of solid ground skills, strength, and improving striking have impressed the UFC enough to put him on the November UFC 138: Leben vs. Munoz fight card in Birmingham, England. The fight will be against fellow roster addition Phil De Fries, who will also be making his debut. MMABay first reported the bout.
With only two losses on his record from the same legendary heavyweight tournament organized by ZT Fight Night, and the last of which he owes to fellow Briton Rob Broughton, it looks as though Thompson will be trying to make a statement to close out a successful 2011 campaign.
The UFC’s first five-round non-title bout, a middleweight showdown between Chris Leben and Mark Munoz, heads the UFC 138 fight card.
