VANCOUVER – The fighters for Saturday’s UFC 131: dos Santos vs. Carwin weighed in Friday afternoon at the Jack Poole Plaza.
Near the Olympic Cauldron from the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver, the cast of UFC 131 stepped on the scale to make the 12-bout fight card official.
There wasn’t a lot of trepidation for the main event as its a heavyweight bout between two fighters that aren’t pushing the top end of the division… at least not any longer. Shane Carwin used to be around the 265-pound limit, but changed up his diet recently, lightening the load.
Carwin, a late replacement for TUF 13 coach Brock Lesnar, stepped on the scale at 254 pounds, while his opponent, the current number one UFC heavyweight contender, Junior dos Santos weighed in at 239 pounds.
“I feel great. It’s been a great camp, recovered from surgery. I’m so excited to be here. I’m excited to have this opportunity,” said Carwin after weighing in. “You get to see two of the best heavyweight fighters tomorrow and somebody is getting knocked out and it’s not going to be me.”
“I’m feeling great. I know Shane Carwin is a tough opponent for me, but for sure someone is going to get knocked out tomorrow,” said dos Santos. “Just remember guys, don’t blink.”
A little more questionable was how co-main eventer Kenny Florian, now a veteran of four weight classes, would look on the scale, making his first cut to the featherweight division. He faces no easy task in his 145-pound debut, stepping into the Octagon to face Top 10 fighter and Jose Aldo training partner Diego Nunes.
