B.J. Penn vs. Jon Fitch
Round 1:Penn immediately shoots on Fitch, pressing him to the cage. They trade knees for a time, then Fitch reverses position and presses Penn to the fence. Fitch separates, throws a couple wide punches, then shoots for the takedown, but Penn remains on his feet, back against the cage. Then he reverses positions, throws a few punches, and takes Fitch down at the halfway point of round one. Penn takes Fitch’s back and locks on a body triangle. Fitch is scrambling, but Penn maintains his back, nearly securing a rear naked choke. Fitch gets out and they are back up on their feet, Fitch pressing Penn to the cage. Round 2: Fitch starts with a kick. Penn stuffs it, but gets taken down, Fitch pressing him to the cage and tying up Penn’s legs. Penn slips out to his feet, but Fitch is relentless, pressing him to the cage and trying to take him back down. Fitch comes up, but Penn lands some close in elbow strikes. Fitch continually pressing his weigh ton Penn, but Penn is the one landing more shots while they are on the cage, utilizing elbow strikes. Fitch starts bleeding from the nose. He clinches Penn, but the Hawaiian escapes with two minutes left in the round. He shoots and takes Fitch down again. His training with Matt Hughes is paying dividends. He climbs on Fitch’s back. Fitch turns into Penn’s full guard and starts unleashing his ground and pound attack. Penn doing a good job swimming Fitch’s arms, avoiding heavy damage, and then scrambles to his feet before the bell. MMAWeekly.com scores round two 10-9 for Penn.
Round 3: Fitch opens with a big right hand and takes Penn down, landing in his full guard, starting right up where he left off with more ground and pound. Penn kicks him off and gets back to his feet, but eats a left hand and gets taken down again. Penn back up, but Fitch clinches from behind and takes him back to the mat. He starts his ground and pound from Penn’s guard. Fitch is punishing Penn with a relentless amount of punches. Fitch just keeps going and going, mixing up punches and elbows. Two minutes left in the round and he’s not slowing down. Penn is trapped on his back next to the fence, eating shot after shot, moving, but not finding a way out. One minute left. Fitch just keeps pouring it on as the seconds tick away, Penn can’t stop it, but Fitch can’t finish him either. MMAWeekly.com scores round three 10-9 for Fitch.
