With the main event of UFC 127 ending in a draw, all signs would point towards Jon Fitch and B.J. Penn matching up and having a second fight to settle the score once and for all. And if things play out in the welterweight division, it could even turn into a five round title fight.
The question was posed to both Fitch and Penn at the UFC 127 post fight press conference, and with a good point that if Georges St-Pierre is able to defeat Jake Shields in April, then what about a 5 round title fight for their rematch to determine a new champion once GSP leaves to division to fight at middleweight?
Fitch seemed all for the it.
“I think that would be a great idea. I’d be down for that,” Fitch commented. “I think it would be an epic fight.”
A very subdued B.J. Penn however had to disagree. At points in his post fight speech, Penn made it sound like his bout in Australia was a make or break type situation for him, and while he appears ready to carry on for the future, he still doesn’t believe he’s done enough to earn a shot at any belt right now.
“I can understand where Jon’s coming from, but I think I need one more win over Jon before I get a shot at a title,” Penn stated.
Of course plenty of things have to happen before a title shot can even be discussed between Fitch and Penn. St-Pierre still has to battle a top 3 welterweight contender in Jake Shields, who is obviously no walkover. Beyond that, the UFC would need to decide to match up Penn and Fitch one more time, and make it a title fight.
Surely fighters like Carlos Condit, who is also waiting in the wings, would have a thing or two to say about that.
Regardless of how it plays out, Fitch still sits on the sidelines for now as the contender that just can’t seem to get a second shot at the belt. This time around however, Fitch points to the man in the mirror for costing him a shot.
“I’m awfully disappointed with my performance and I don’t know, I expect more and I should have put on a better show and performed better tonight to make that a question no one had to ask,” Fitch answered when posed about a potential title fight next for him.
Penn vs. Fitch 2 seems to make all the sense in the world, but what will be on the line when they battle it out remains to be seen.
