Joe “Daddy” Stevenson (31-11) vs. Mac Danzig (19-8-1)
A pair of former “Ultimate Fighter” winners, Joe Stevenson and Mac Danzig, face off in a lightweight bout that could leave the loser seeking employment elsewhere, especially for Danzig.
This is a tough fight to pick despite the odds having Stevenson as a -300 favorite and Danzig a +220 underdog.
The two are closely matched on their feet with a slight edge probably going to Danzig for having more tools in his bag of tricks. Both are technical boxers with good defense, but neither is a knockout artist.
On the ground it comes down to who will be able to maintain top position. From the top, Stevenson has brutal ground and pound. If you’re able to put him on his back, you stand a much better chance.
They’ll both likely be able to fend off the other’s submission attempts. The match-up could play out as an exciting MMA grappling match filled with crazy scrambles, reversals, submission attempts, and escapes. It could also unfold mostly as an MMA kickboxing match.
Most likely this fight will be all over the place and be decided by the Octagon-side judges.
Stevenson is coming off a loss to George Sotiropoulos after stringing together back-to-back wins since joining trainer Greg Jackson.
Danzig is coming off a loss to Matt Wiman by referee mistake at UFC 115. He’s stated that he’s rediscovered a love for training. Having lost four of his last five outings, Danzig is in desperate need of a “W.”
Expect Stevenson to utilize his takedown ability to walk away with a decision victory, but if you’re looking for an underdog pick, Danzig might not be a bad bet.
