Call it revenge. Call it redemption. Call it what you like, but Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami are both hoping to get the opportunity to fight Anderson Silva a second time with the UFC title on the line.
Okami was the last man to defeat Silva. The fight ended in disqualification and Okami was awarded the victory at Rumble on the Rock 8 in January of 2006. Okami wants to prove he can defeat the current UFC 185-pound titleholder a second time.
Silva delivered a devastating up-kick to the face of Okami, who was postured up in his guard, rendering the Japanese fighter unable to continue. Okami feels they didn’t get to finish what was started nearly five years ago.
“I would like to fight against Mr. Anderson Silva since there is unfinished business between I and Mr. Anderson,” Okami said when asked who he’d rather fight between Silva and Belfort.
For Marquardt, he wants to erase the loss at hands of Silva at UFC 73 in July of 2007, where Silva defended his title against him by technical knockout late in the first round.
The title is more important than avenging a loss to Marquardt, but if he could choose who he’d fight for the title it would be Anderson Silva.
“For me the most important thing is to get the title fight and fight the champion. That’s my dream is to become the champion,” said Marquardt. “For me it doesn’t necessarily matter who it is, but at the same time, I would definitely prefer it to be Silva just because he’s been the champion for so long and he’s proven to be the top of the division.”
UFC middleweight titleholder Anderson Silva puts his belt on the line at UFC 126 on Feb. 5 against former UFC light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort. Nate Marquardt and Yushin Okami compete to secure their position as next in line this weekend at UFC 122.
