UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez Weigh-in Photo Gallery
The Ultimate Fighting Championship marks its Memphis debut on Saturday night with UFC 107: Penn vs. Sanchez at the FedEx Forum. UFC lightweight champion B.J. Penn headlines the card, defending his title against inaugural “Ultimate Fighter” winner Diego Sanchez.
The fighters stepped on the scales Friday afternoon at the FedEx Forum and it appears that they had trouble skipping the famed Memphis barbeque this week as the majority needed a second attempt to make their target weight.
Amidst a chorus of “fix the scale” chants, Penn was the only fighter on the card – aside from two heavyweight bouts and a catchweight bout – that wasn’t at least one pound over his target weight, although there is a one-pound allowance for non-title fights.
Teeming with intensity, Sanchez stepped on the scale at 156 pound, with Penn at 155. In a title fight, the fighters must hit the prescribed weight. Sanchez made it at 154.5 pounds on a second attempt.
Neither had much to say after the weigh-ins, Penn giving his thanks and saying, “I just want to enjoy all this. I just want to go out there and do my best.”
Sanchez was even more concise. He would only say, “Destiny, baby. That’s it!”
Cheick Kongo tipped the scale at 247 pounds, while his counterpart, Frank Mir, hit 264.5, a half-pound under the heavyweight division’s limit. Unlike years past, Mir looked quite fit at the weight.
SportsIllustrated.com’s Josh Gross says Mir’s fitness is thanks to World’s Strongest Man competitor Mike Philippi, whose training center has become Mir’s home base for workouts.
Mir and Kongo have been very outspoken leading up to the fight, but Kongo had no words for Mir on Friday, turning his back to the former champion when they squared off for photographers.
Bounding onto the stage like the Energizer Bunny, Clay Guida had no trouble with the scale, hitting the 156-pound limit for his lightweight bout dead on, as did his opponent, Kenny Florian.
