LOS ANGELES – UFC 104 features a light heavyweight championship bout between current titleholder Lyoto Machida and challenger Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at The Staples Center in Los Angeles. The fighters stepped on the scales before a healthy crowd on Friday to weigh-in and make their bouts official.
A few fighters had trouble hitting their requisite weights, but not the main eventers. The champion, Machida weighed in at 202.5 pounds, well below his 205-pound limit. Shogun was also slightly under the limit, stepping on the scale at 204.5 pounds.
After weighing in, both fighters assured a fight that fans would remember come Saturday night.
“Tomorrow I put on a great performance. I have been doing my homework,” said Machida. While Shogun related, “This belt is my dream. Tomorrow, gonna put on a show for everybody.”
In the co-main event, UFC newcomer Ben Rothwell tipped the scales at 265 pounds, outweighing his opponent, Cain Velasquez, by nearly 30 pounds. Velasquez weighed in at 238 pounds.
Anthony Johnson, facing Yoshiyuki Yoshida in a welterweight contest, couldn’t make weight, stepping on the scale at 176 pounds. Yoshida weighed in at the appropriate 170 pounds, but agreed to take the fight anyway. Johnson was fined 20 percent of his $15,000 show money, 10 percent of which goes to Yoshida, while the other 10 percent goes to the California State Athletic Commission.
In a lightweight bout that kicks off the pay-per-view broadcast, both Josh Neer and Gleison Tibau were slightly over the 156-pound allowance for their fight. With Neer at 156.5 pounds and Tibau 157 pounds, both fighters agreed to accept the fight without any weight cutting and received no penalties.
