The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Tuesday shocked many people by naming UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen as the next coaches for The Ultimate Fighter in the United States.
Not only that, but Sonnen, who has fought at light heavyweight in the past, has been competing primarily at middleweight for the past several years. He failed in his second and most recent bid to wrest the middleweight title from champion Anderson Silva in July. So many people were perplexed by Sonnen being granted a title shot following TUF 17.
Jones and Sonnen will battle for the belt at an undisclosed venue and location on April 27, 2013.
The idea behind the move is surely to try and bolster the TUF TV ratings, which have been steadily declined since making the move to FX early this year.
The idea has also upset a few people. Dan Henderson, who has been next in line for a shot at Jones prior to suffering an injury that derailed their UFC 151 bout, took to Twitter to express his dismay over the fight. Anthony Pettis and Donald Derrone also have to be somewhat disappointed since they were the odds-on favorites to coach TUF 17 prior to the shift in strategy to Jones and Sonnen.
So there are many questions lingering out on the fringe of the situation, and the UFC aims to address them during a quickly organized media call that includes Jones, Sonnen, and UFC president Dana White.
The call takes place Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT.
