Herb Dean has been terrible with this as of late. Definite early stoppage.
I have less issue with an early stoppage if it’s in the interests of keeping people from getting hurt.
Perfect example: Miller-Bispig probably should have been called in the second. That third round was unnecessary and just sad to watch. Dillashaw is lucky to have had someone step in, because Dodson continuing to pound him seems universally agreed on.
No way. Herb put himself in bad position to see what was happening. Dodson rocked TJ and followed up with another glancing blow, but when Herb stepped in, TJ was deep on a single leg.
How do you let Pat Barry vs. Chieck Kongo go on but stop this one. Needs to be consistency.
at first i thought it was an early stoppage, but it wasnt the worst call ive ever seen, thats for sure. id rather see a fight get stopped to soon rather than to late. there cant be consistency because its a judgement call and every fight is so different.
Frankie Edgar woulda lost his title, in both fights.
I do believe the stoppage was a little bit premature. Herb Dean is the best ref in the business and he hardly if ever makes mistakes or calls fights too early. Dillashaw was grabbing a hold of Dodson’s leg when he started to wave the fight, but when he got up is when he seemed dazed and badly hurt. The decision is torn and meets in the middle. Herb Dean I’m sure could care less what anyone thinks anyways. What’s done is done!
John Dodson could and SHOULD drop down to 125 when the UFC implements that division. Then they can sign guys like Ian McCall, Jussier Da Silva. Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez are also rumored to be dropping into that weight class. That’s how they can get the ball rolling with Flyweight 🙂

I’ve never understood the herb dean fans. Unless its the group that would rather have 20 fights stopped too early than one fight too late. My friends and I refer to him as early stop herb. (I know, not to original.)
We actually get surprized by him sometimes. Sometimes he let’s guys go, but it is about a 20-1 ratio. I still prefer John. I think most fighters would. Hopefully he’ll eventually get let back into Nevada.
I don’t want guys getting hurt either. I don’t get pissed at early stops, but sometimes I feel bad for the guys. But look what herb has done. He has got posters here, and even joe rogan lowering the bar on stoppages to a guy “having wobbly legs.”. I missed the memo when wobbly legs meant a fight should be stooped. If herb was consistent, and he refed the next fight, we’d have a different featherweight tuf winner.
By the way, I don’t think herb was actually happy with his stop. He was in a bad position, and touched the fighter. As soon as he did he looked back at tj with a sad/guilty look on his face. it happens. It will happen again. It’s just part of the sport.
