Frankie Edgar pits his skill against B.J. Penn for the Ultimate Fighting Championship lightweight title, tentatively scheduled for UFC 112 on April 10.
Mike Constantino, one of his trainers, believes Edgar might be “The Answer” to Penn’s reign when discussing the match up with MMAWeekly.com recently.
“I think Frankie poses a good shot,” said the AMA Fight Club head instructor, but he wasn’t giving up any secrets. “I can’t really get too far into it because my opinion is a strong opinion and hopefully it’s the right opinion, so I really don’t want to say why I think he can beat B.J.”
Constantino knows what Edgar is up against. Penn is the No. 1 ranked lightweight in the world and has finished all five of his lightweight opponents since returning to the division in 2007 after bouncing around higher weight classes.
“B.J. is obviously the best in the world at his weight class,” said Constantino. “Not many people can even give B.J. a run at it. He can make somebody who is an excellent fighter look bad fast.”
Looking at the match-up, Constantino commented, “Frankie’s a great wrestler. B.J.’s looked like he’s wanted to bang in the last couple of fights. Frankie’s definitely not afraid to bang. I think it could be a very exciting fight, and I’m really looking forward to it.
“They’re both great with their hands,” added the trainer. “Frankie’s quick. Frankie’s got the footwork and head movement. B.J.’s strong. He drops people with the first punch he throws of a fight. His jab is incredible. Look what he did to Sean Sherk using the jab.
“It’s going to be a real interesting fight. I’m real interested to see how B.J. tacts it with his game plan, and I’m really interested to see Frankie and how he’s going to go into that fight and just see how that fight’s going to unfold.”
