TJ Dillashaw Doesn’t Think Conor McGregor Deserves UFC Title Shot; ‘Edgar Would Destroy Him’

There is no denying that flamboyant Irishman Conor McGregor has made a major impact on the mixed martial arts world since his arrival in the Octagon.

McGregor is currently riding a 12-fight winning streak, including all four of his UFC bouts. In the Octagon, he has defeated Marcus Brimage, Max Holloway, Diego Brandao, and Dustin Poirier. In those four bouts, he’s earned one Knockout of the Night and two Performance of the Night bonuses.

Quite possibly, he’s been even more successful outside of the cage, utilizing his gift for gab to not only talk at length at media events surrounding is own fights, but also at question and answers sessions and the like, inciting both reporters and fans alike. McGregor has even filled in for UFC president Dana White, who recently put a damper on his usual post-fight scrums with reporters.

If he beats Dennis Siver in the UFC Fight Night 59 main event in Boston on Jan. 18, it’s likely that McGregor will get the next shot at UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo.

While McGregor has been on a tear in the Octagon and out of it, current bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw still doesn’t feel like the Irishman has done enough with his fists, and has made too much headway towards a title shot with his mouth.

“I don’t agree with Conor McGregor getting a title shot, especially after beating Dennis Siver, if he does. Why is that deserving of a title shot? Dennis Siver is not on the way up; he’s not up there looking for a title shot himself,” Dillashaw said during a recent edition of Submission Radio.

Dillashaw believes there are fighters that should still be considered ahead of McGregor in the line to a title shot. He believes that fighters like Frankie Edgar, Chad Mendes, and Ricardo Lamas are fighters not only already pushing for the belt, but fighters that would give McGregor fits in the Octagon.

“Why not put Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar? Why not put Conor McGregor against Chad Mendes, or Lamas, or one of those top guys, who’s actually pushing for the belt? Just because he has the hype behind him, and he’s been talking a big game, and he’s going to sell tickets, I just don’t think it’s right to surpass the Frankie Edgars, the guys that could beat Conor McGregor,” said the champ.

“I think Frankie Edgar would destroy Conor McGregor. Chad Mendes would destroy Conor McGregor. We haven’t seen Conor McGregor fight a wrestler or a top name.”

Despite calling McGregor’s win over Poirier “a fluke,” Dillashaw does respect his fighting skills. He just doesn’t feel like McGregor has yet earned a shot at the belt.

“He’s really good, he’s confident, he has great stand-up, and he’s tricky, but I just don’t feel like he’s deserving yet. I don’t think he should surpass those guys to get the shot; and if he does, the thing is, if he does fight Aldo, he does have a chance because it’s going to be a stand-up battle. And then Aldo doesn’t have that threatening takedown skills, and going to try and tap you, or ground and pound you.

“I don’t think he should get the title fight because he doesn’t deserve it, but it’s going to be a close fight in my mind.”

““Why not put Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar? Why not put Conor
McGregor against Chad Mendes, or Lamas, or one of those top guys, who’s
    actually pushing for the belt?”

They were booked to fight already. Siver wasn’t. Let’s all bitch about Dillashaw fighting Joe “Who?” Soto, because he’s all that was available.

    • Darin

His complaint isn’t that Conor is fighting Siver, it’s that he will be granted a title shot for winning that fight. Dillashaw was prepared to fight Barao, but Barao was a no-show. Dillashaw could’ve backed out after that, but he risked his belt to fight a guy he knew nothing about and hadn’t prepared for.

If you spent half the time reading the article as you do making new names to post asinine comments you’d understand this.

      • TheCerealKiller

Watch out, his next post will be as “Darins mom”. Oh no, here comes Cerealsmom next. He even up votes his own comments, all guest up votes.

    • BarrysHypocrisy

He had to fight Joe Soto because Barao pussed out and didn’t show up for the fight.

  • BjDillashaw

And let’s be honest, did Dillashaw even deserve a title shot in the first place? Nah. But he got it, and he won. So hindsight’s 20/20. Get your head outta your ass, Pretty Boy. Lose the ego, it’s never become you.

    • BJDillisAuce

Mister sauce boss… who do you think you are mister sauce boss …. maybe he should go back to mars

  • josh

Tj was on a one fight winning streak and he got his title shot. Man I hate this kid, he acts like he has held the belt for years, bashing fighters and talking about “super” fights. To me just because two champions fight doesn’t make it a super fight, there’s nothing super about this kid. He won the belt, thats impressive, but not super incredible.

    • nose trappacante

call him sauce boss or dillisauce

  • Guille Becke

stop talking of everyone Dillashaw, You’re a champion of paper.

    • taylor2008

Is he really? He dominated Barao. And NOBODY has done anything close to that.

      • Just-scrap-nation

He did only defeat Mike Easton to get that title shot though. He is the champ but he isn’t one to say who’s “deserving” of a title shot. McGregor is a threat to Aldo. No doubt.

  • Thequestion

Edgar would dominate Conor. The guy doesn’t deserve the shot on anything other than being a fresh challenger. Doubt he’s even top 5. He doesn’t have a signature win and has yet to face a wrestler. Facts.

  • BarrysHypocrisy

hehehehe…I love it when the McGregor fanboys talk about other people being ignorant and delusional. Especially when all of McGregor’s fights have been against cherry picked opponents who are designed to make him look good.

    • Smokey

Cherry picked? STFU. Absolutely NOBODY called ANY of McGregor’s opponents “cherry picked” leading up to his fights. Every single time the haters were saying “this will be the guy to stop the hype train”. Its only afterwards when McGregors made them look like an easy job that the haters change their minds and start calling them bums. The fact that they’re criticizing who hes been matched with is proof in itself that they know how good he is but dont want to admit it. 4 fights in the UFC – First against a fighter whos 3-0 in the UFC. Second against one of the brightest prospects in the division. Third against a BJJ black belt, TUF winner who’d won 7 of his previous 9 fights. Fourth against a #5 ranked contender. Open your eyes and stop being another ignorant hater.

      • TheCerealKiller

I think Conor is a giant tool bag, but screw it. If he beats Siver, give him a title shot. If he loses, it’s a great day for the haters. If he wins, you just beat the champ. I guess you did deserve it.

      • anmmafanfromday1

Connor is an arrogant, big mouth A-hole who is just a little too full of himself although he is a decent fighter, but he has not proved himself against a wrestler of top fighter if he is as great as he and the rest of his nut huggers (which includes Dana) think he is then what is wrong with a good match to prove he is what he thinks he is before he gets a title fight. he is just another guy that Dana feels will make more money regardless whether or not he has earned it, can you say Brock Lesnar.

      • BarrysHypocrisy

hahahahaha…….you proved my point exactly. Re-read my original post about fanboys being delusional.

Put McGregor up against a quality wrestler and he’ll get DOMINATED. And Dana knows it.

  • fightfan

fu.k me thank you Smokey bout time sumone spoke the truth!!!

  • Beebo420

Connors the next champ, it doesn’t matter who they thow in front of him. Watch and wittness

  • Darin

Once again….TJ’s beef is with the fact that Dublin McIrish is being promised a TITLE SHOT for beating Siver. Of course, we all know how Dana’s promises of title shots tend to pan out….

  • DamianCross

Meh, Jon Jones said the same crap about the challengers in his division. Whatever. The champ can believe what he wants as long as he fights who he’s told to.

  • jsjs

Pls make Edgar vs Mcgregor! Id be more excited for that than him fighting Aldo.

  • Ron Wheeler

I used to think McGregor was all hype, but I said if he bets Poirier I’ll give him the respect he deserves. So he is a beardy loudmouth ponce with good skills.

    • Gabe B

Hahahaha Dustin Poirier? Are you f—ing kidding me? XD

  • Just-scrap-nation

Yes exactly. McGregor hasnt fought a wrestler. Mendes never fought an elite striker.

  • Scooby Doo

Conor should knock TJ’s head off and then rape his carcass.

  • Raylaugherty

Everybody can chill the fuvk out,bc lets say that mcgregor does win against aldo,,He will definitely be fighting a wrestler, 2 defend the belt.
