Three more heavyweight bouts have been added to the upcoming Strikeforce show set to go down on Feb 12 in New Jersey to kick off the promotion’s first ever Heavyweight Grand Prix.
On Tuesday, Strikeforce confirmed a previously rumored fight between Lavar Johnson and Shane Del Rosario was announced. The two heavyweights have both been on an impressive run as of late, and they graduate from the Strikeforce Challengers series to the main card of a Showtime broadcast headlined by Fedor Emelianenko against Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva.
“I’m looking forward to fighting again and fighting Lavar on Feb. 12,” said Del Rosario. “We’ve both fought on Challengers and now we get to show what we can do on a big show. I’m excited about that. This will be a great fight between two hungry fighters.”
Also added to the February card will be upset specialist Chad Griggs, who defeated Bobby Lashley in his Strikeforce debut, taking on Gian Villante.
The third fight added to the card will feature Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem’s older brother Valentijn Overeem against K-1 legend Ray Sefo.
Legend is almost not a strong enough word to describe Sefo in the kickboxing world and he hopes to duplicate some of that success when he steps in against Overeem on Feb 12.
Tickets go on sale for the Feb event on Jan 14 and the show will take place at the IZOD Center in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
