Nick Thompson has confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that his upcoming rematch with Eddie Alvarez set for Nov. 24 has been cancelled. The current Bodog Fight welterweight champion indicated that he suffered an injury that will keep him out of the bout.
Thompson defeated Alvarez in April 2007 to win the title. A rematch was set to take place at the Hook ‘N’ Shoot promotion in Indiana.
“I had an injury to my shoulder,” Thompson stated about the fight cancellation. “Nothing real serious, but it affected my training. Eddie (Alvarez) and I were originally supposed to fight Dec. 8 and they moved it up to (Nov. 24) and with the injury and the move up date, I’m just not going to be ready in time.”
The shoulder injury that he sustained will not keep the fighter out of action for long, but the champion understands how important his health is going into a bout with a fighter like Alvarez.
“On the ground I can use it okay, but I can’t throw it (standing) the way I need to, to fight Eddie,” said Thompson about the injury.
“If I get two weeks totally off, it will heel. It will be fine. It’s something that if I kept going, it was going to get to the point where I couldn’t use it.”
No date has been named for the rematch to take place, but Thompson advised MMAWeekly.com that the fight with Alvarez would still be his next fight regardless of the injury.
