They say third time is a charm. Alessio Sakara certainly hopes so.
The Italian is now on his third opponent for UFC on Versus 3 in Louisville, Ky. Both Sakara’s original opponent, Maiquel Falcao, and his replacement, Rafael Natal, have dropped out due to injury. The UFC has confirmed that newcomer Chris Weidman has signed to hopefully make it all the way to fight night on March 3.
Weidman is undefeated as a professional, amassing four wins in four attempts. All four bouts took place under the Ring of Combat banner. A member of the Serra-Longo fight team, Weidman is also a two-time All American wrestler from Hofstra University in his home state of New York.
Sakara (15-7) has gone 4-1 since making the move to American Top Team, and is currently riding a three-fight winning streak. He hasn’t fought in nearly a year, however, due initially to the death of his father, which was followed by injuries and illness that have kept him out of action.
The two are expected to meet on the main card of UFC on Versus 3, headlined by Diego Sanchez vs. Martin Kampmann.
