The Ultimate Fighter 18 Week 4 Notes: Team Rousey’s Edmond Tarverdyan in Another Altercation

Posted on by Jeff Cain

Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate TUF 18 CoachesTensions between the Team Rousey and Team Tate coaching staffs continued in the fourth episode of The Ultimate Fighter 18.

Coaches Nearly Come to Blows

During last week’s episode, Team Rousey striking coach Edmond Tarverdyan had some choice words for Miesha Tate’s boyfriend Bryan Caraway.  This week, Tarverdyan focused his attention on former UFC fighter Dennis Hallman.

“Dennis Hallman is one of our guest coaches.  He’s fought in the UFC.  He’s a friend of ours.  We’ve trained with him a bunch, so we wanted to bring him out here,” explained coach Tate.  “Edmond was eyeballing Dennis up and down just like he’s been kind of doing to all the rest of us, the rest of our crew.  And Dennis is just not one to put up with that.”

Tarverdyan offered to give Hallman his phone number so they could settle their differences.  Hallman suggested they go into the UFC gym and “go right now.”  Tarverdyan suggested that Hallman was trying to get him kicked off the show.  Coach Ronda Rousey intervened and told Hallman to do it at the right time.

“Look at the cameras.  Do it when they’re not around and then you’ll be a man,” said Rousey to the 69-fight veteran.

Hallman responded, “I can wait here until they leave.”

“When I first got here, it didn’t seem like it was going to be so bad until they lost the first fight,” said Tate.  “After Julie (Pena) beat Shayna (Baszler), Ronda has been throwing a piss-fit.”

UFC president Dana White had to play mediator between the two teams.

“I’m like guys, stop.  This isn’t going to happen here.  This isn’t what this is about.  It’s not what we’re here for,” said White.  “We are here for these fighters and let’s give them every opportunity to win.  All this drama and (expletive) will be settled when Ronda and Miesha fight.”

The Fight: Roxanne Modafferi vs. Jessica Rakoczy

Rakoczy had a shoulder injury heading into the bout and Coach Rousey believed that’s why Team Tate picked her to fight this week.

Stylistically the match-up put a striker against a grappler.  Rakoczy is a boxing champion, while Modafferi is known for her submission prowess.

Modafferi secured a takedown early in the opening round, but was unable to inflict damage.  Rakoczy fought her way off the bottom and gained top control.  Modaferri isolated an arm and worked for submissions, but Rakoczy defended the submission attempts.  Modaferri won the round on MMAWeekly.com’s scorecard with a late takedown.

Rakoczy put her boxing skills on display in the second frame.  She landed a left hook that knocked Modaferri down, but Modaferri quickly bounced back to her feet.  She pulled guard and Rakoczy unloaded punches before letting Modaferri up.  The referee warned Rakoczy about grabbing the fence, but did not take a point.  When the fight resumed, Modaferri secured a takedown.  Rakoczy reversed her and Modaferri applied a closed guard.  Rakoczy elevated her and slammed Modaferri to the canvas nearly knocking her out.  Rakoczy landed punches as Modaferri struggled to defend herself.  The referee stepped in and stopped the fight.

Jessica Rakoczy gave Team Rousey its first win of the season.

Fight Announcement

Rakoczy’s technical knockout of Modaferri switched matchmaking control to Team Rousey.  Coach Rousey decided to match David Grant against Team Tate’s Louis Fisette.

Honda needs to get rid of that guy as her coach. Honestly, Honda’s standup is terribad and it reflects on who’s training her. If you google her coach he’s into all sorts of DerpFu Bullshido nonsense. She needs to train with Luiz Carlos Dorea the same guy who teaches Dos Santos and Silva how to box and throw combinations.

As for Modafferi she lost her last 5 pro fights on idea why she’s on this show, was gassed out after 30 seconds. Yeah I like that’s she’s waifu/weaboo and not a typical fighter but she can’t fight.

ok i keep hearing that maybe they edit stuff so we get just a portion of the story and they make ronda look like a b1tch. Correct me if i am wrong, but isnt ronda the favorite fighter of mr dana right now?? Isnt she the reason he changed his mind and allowed women mma in ufc? Doesnt he always say she is top3 most popular (male/female included) fighters of the ufc right now? What on earth does he have to gain from editing tuf so that she looks like a bitch and loose fans?? My guess is that the editing is making her look like a less bitch than she really is lol! Imagine the shit they ha ve to cut out to protect her!!!

Excellent point! I thought the same thing but you said it very well. When it comes to portraying the UFC’s new “star” Ronda Rousey in the most favorable light, TUF TV editors have the impossible task of polishing a turd.

Roxanne won her fight to get onto the show and won the first round, so it’s not like she was completely outclassed. Even if it’s for what she’s done for the sport in the past, she earned the opportunity to be on the show and give it a shot.

With Ronda, it seems like she’s with that team as more of a family environment than it being the best camp. If she loses then I wouldn’t be surprised if she blames the team and then goes elsewhere. Seems like a lot of fighters are that way.

It’s hard to really give an intelligent opinion when we don’t always get the full story. We are seeing roughly 40 minutes of footage in each episode and given that restriction alone, they have to cut out a lot of stuff. It’s easy to cut stuff out and make something appear different from what it actually is. It’s really easy to edit footage and take stuff out of context to give your audience what you want to give them.

With all of that being said, no matter what the cause or reasoning behind it, Ronda is coming off like a real b*tch. I don’t know if we are seeing the real Ronda or if this is some kind of editing ploy but I can see now why Ronda was so upset with the screening she saw and the image problems this season could give her. One thing is for sure though, she is coming off very poorly. Not a good look Ronda Rousey.

    • Maddawgmar

You are right, however I felt Ronda actually was the smart one here trying to diffuse the situation, at least while on camera.

With Ronda’s personality, it would be easy to provoke her without looking like you are. I would be able to make her flip while looking like I did nothing. Completely possible that could be happening, and it’s not coming across on camera. Whatever it is, she should ease off a bit.

Edman..2 fights whatever his name is is beyond annoying. The guy should stop staring down legit MMA fighters who could easily beat him down. Why mean mug a guy like Hallman who’s fought the top guys in the world. Then when Hallman calls his bluff Eddie starts bitching about “trying to get him kicked off the show” then big mouth Ronda jumps in and calls him b*tch cause he didn’t back down from little eddie. I lose more respect for Ronda with every episode I see. Typical bully tactics then she throws a fit when anyone stands up to her and her mini coach.

  • joe

I hate this Edmond guy! I cant understand what he says on tge show he sucks! Im interested in what yhe arminian comment or sltercation is going to be Go tatertots

  • lance

I really hope Tate’s team wins this season and Tate takes the title from Rousey. Rousey lacks professionalism and is a terrible representative of martial arts.

  • Fritz

i just cant take watchiing this crap anymore… tuf 18 the biggest crap in mma reality shows

  • BarrysHypocrisy

Tarverdyan is TRYING to come off as some sort of tough guy and instead is just making himself look like a b*tch, especially when Rousey had to jump in and save him from Hallman.

  • julian moran

Knowing Ronda was on the show, I have not watched 1 episode.
I did however predict Ronda to lose her declining fan base after this show. It seems I was correct.

  • james j

I am betting Edmond smells Like cabbage

  • scott

Hallman should of gave it to him

  • scott

Miesha Tate in her tights are winning me over weekly I know that!!!!!!! Caraway you lucky SOB

  • El Gvapo

Did I hear correctly in this episode? That Jessica said “my mom was always hanging around black guys and I was kind of embarrassed because I thought she was stronger than that…”

    • El Gvapo

Can’t believe they showed it if that’s what she did say.

  • L

She’s basically a hobby MMA fighter.
The real story though, was Ronda and her coaching staff making fools of themselves. Ronda keeps trying to rewrite history and assure us “Our team isn’t just talk”…

  • Maddawgmar

Read my comment, I didn’t defend or even mention Edmond. Spew you haterade some where else. Loser ass, keyboard warrior.

  • El Gvapo

Do you think Hallman would win the fight? It’s unclear which side of the fence you sit.
