Thiago Tavares is expected to face Nik Lentz at UFC Fight Night 20 on Jan. 11 in Fairfax, Va., according to a source close to the situation.
Jeremy Stephens was originally scheduled to take on Lentz, but was forced to withdraw due to an undisclosed injury.
Tavares, 25, picked up a crucial win over Manny Gamburyan at UFC 94, but remained sidelined until he got the call to step in. Until the victory, he was skating on thin ice with two consecutive losses to Matt Wiman and Kurt Pellegrino at UFC 85 and 88, respectively.
News of the shake-up was first reported by MMAJunkie.com.
Ultimate Fight Night 20, the promotion’s first trip to the Old Dominion state, is headlined by lightweights Gray Maynard and Nate Diaz. The Patriot Center hosts the event.
