UFC officials announced the event on Monday, also revealing two of the card’s fights.
Heavyweight contenders Fabricio Werdum and Travis Browne will meet with the winner likely securing a heavyweight title shot. Plus, women’s bantamweight fighters Miesha Tate and Liz Carmouche will also fight in Florida.
Werdum recently revealed that he expected to fight Browne in a five-round main event bout, but thought it might be in the latter half of March. Their fight is instead moved to the April 19 card in Orlando, although UFC officials couldn’t yet confirm a main event for UFC on Fox 11.
Werdum (17-5-1) had been next in line for a shot at current UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, but with the champ out for the next several months due to a shoulder injury, the Brazilian instead opted to get back in the Octagon to fight Browne. Werdum will have been out of action for nearly a year by the time the April date rolls around, having last fought when he submitted Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira last June.
Browne (16-1-1) enters the fight coming off of back-to-back-to-back Knockout of the Night performances, defeating Gabriel Gonzaga, Alistair Overeem, and Josh Barnett in consecutive bouts.
Having recently coached on The Ultimate Fighter and then lost a rematch with Ronda Rousey, Tate (13-5) needs a victory in a bad way. Having lost her UFC debut to Cat Zingano in April of 2013, Tate has yet to score a victory in the Octagon and has lost three of her four most recent bouts.
Carmouche (9-4) also lost to Rousey in the Octagon. That was the first women’s fight ever under the UFC banner. She bounced back with a victory over Jessica Andrade a few months later, but stumbled to a unanimous decision loss to Alexis Davis at the UFC Fight for the Troops event in November.
Tickets for the event are expected to go on sale Feb. 14. More details will be available in coming weeks on MMAWeekly.com.
