Talks Between Gina Carano and UFC Reach an Impasse; Negotiations with Holly Holm Progressing

Gina CaranoTalks between the UFC and former women’s MMA standout Gina Carano have stalled, according to a report on Wednesday evening.

Sources informed UFC Tonight that negotiations hit a wall between the two sides, further extending the former Strikeforce champion’s absence from MMA competition.

Talks are not dead, however, and both the UFC and Carano are still interested in working with each other, according to the MMA program. Specifics as to the reasons for the impasse were not revealed in the report.

Carano was under contract with Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, through her old deal with Strikeforce, which Zuffa acquired in 2011. The deal expired in June, and Carano is now a free agent.

While talks with Carano are at a stalemate, discussions with Legacy FC star Holly Holm are progressing. Sources informed the FOX Sports 1 show that while a deal is not finalized, negotiations are in a good place.

Both Carano and Holm have been the subject of potential additions to the UFC women’s bantamweight ranks. Current division champion Ronda Rousey’s name has been mentioned as the one to welcome the two potential UFC additions.

gina should stay retired unless she’s gonna work her way back up the ladder. holly holm needs a real test before a title shot, but would be a welcome addition.

    • John Wojtowicz

well then, just do Gina vs Holm

      • WhiteyWhiteman

That would be the stupidest thing to do!

        • Wolf Ticket

I totally think giving Gina a title shot right away would be more stupid.

          • WhiteyWhiteman

I never said anything about Gina having a Title shot. But she deserves a far more high profile fight than Holm. Plus idealy you wouldn’t want either of these ladies to lose in their first fight.

Bring back the girl that got her ass beat by Cyborg 5 years ago to fight for a title?

    • VTV

You mean the one who got beat up by Cyborg while she was mega roided out and was completely undefeated before that? Yeah.

      • TheCerealKiller

She hasn’t fought in five years, why would she get a title shot? Besides, she’s never fought under 145lbs, could she even make the weight?

        • VTV
          • TheCerealKiller

That was just her taking a dig at Cyborg. If it were to happen, it would prove beyond any argument that she really was ducking Cyborg.

          • VTV

I don’t agree. She would not say something like that if she didn’t mean it. But there is more to it then that. Gina is close friends with just about every female MMA fighter. And she is considered to be one of the nicest people in MMA.

          • TheCerealKiller

            A) There is 145 division…

Pretty much A. Dana has made it very clear that there not a 145lbs division. Ronda probably meant what she said, but she doesn’t make matches. It will never happen outside of 135.

          • VTV

Well, that’s your opinion. Catch weight fights happen all the time because “superfights” make money.

          • TheCerealKiller

Catch weights only happen between established divisions.

  • TOOSE

She can’t act, so I guess she needs a job now!

    • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

Only a guy like you would watch her for her acting skills , so you dont get it anyway

      • TOOSE

I’ve never seen her act, but I imagine a guy like you needs a life besides making smart ass remarks online!!

        • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

          you can take notes

  • Shartnado2, the Sloppy One

Too bad. Rousey on Gina grinding out a sweaty mount would be PPV worthy

  • TKDGuy

obviously the reason for the impasse is timing or money, or both. Eventually I think they both return, even if Gina only for one fight. And it will be a marketing bonanza for the UFC.

First fight for Gina has to be RR, you can’t risk her losing to anyone else. It’s been five years so you don’t know what you will get with Gina, but this has the potential to be the biggest fight in MMA history. Gina is not an a list celebrity by any stretch of the imagination, but she it’s an actress that will be vaguely recognized, and RR is everywhere now, two big budget movies the cover of maxim, espn body issue, she has more pees than anyone else in UFC history. This is the only fight that can headline a card on a Monday or Tuesday in primetime on Fox, not fx, not fs1, but Fox. Sure the main event is going to end in Unger a minute by armbar, stack the under card with the most exciting fighters on the roster. By doing this you gained fans that wouldn’t have watched the UFC, made new stars from the under card, Fox gets to promote FS1. Give Gina whatever she wants to make this happen, and take care of Rhonda too.

For anyone that doesn’t agree name one other fight that Fox soul air on a weekday in primetime on Fox.

Its not that big a fight. Gina hasnt fought in 5 YEARS! Rousey vs cyborg is a big fight my friend. If you dont agree then your just a tmz fan or something and not a fight fan.. your in question already.

      • Joe

Like I said the outcome of the fight is easy to predict, and in the world of mma fans it is a spectacle. The reason this is a big fight is because there ate way more”TMZ fans” than MMA fans right now. While MMA is touted as the fastest growing sport, it’s still a fringe sport. One pseudo celebrity, and one who is in 2 current big budget films, who are both very cute makes for one hell of a draw on national broadcast tv. What excites me as an MMA fan is the under card that would be put together to catch a few million fans that never watched MMA. I would prefer to see RR fight cyborg than anyone else, but cyborg looks more like a dude than most guys, so she skull not draw first time viewers.

And as far as being a true mma fan, I’ve been following since the Fred Ettish fetal position beating, and have actually fought in both a ring & cage at three different weight classes. I was never a great fighter, but I did it until my body said it was time to stop because I loved it. I want this sport to become bigger than the NFL in my lifetime, and for that to happen there will have to be the occasional spectacle fight to draw in new fans, and I’m good with that as long as the special fight is used to get people to watch and the rest of the card is full of exciting fights.

A big fight to me is a million plus ppv buys and i dont see that happening just because these two girls are “cute” and because RR is in a couple movies. People just watch RR to see if she’ll lose and a couple more people will go to there local bar because the ufc will promote the shit out of this fight and try to hype gina as the Pioneer and first womens true champion. BS she lost to cyborg for the title. Your probably right that more mainstream and pop culture fans will tune in but i dont see it being a crazy number. I do believe more people would rather watch RR fight cyborg because most fans that watch her want to see if she’ll lose. Not to mention the trash talk that would go on between them and the bs hype ufc will do to support cyborg. There’s already bad blood and history between RR and cyborg and gina will just be a pretty face. I think your correct on some point but not on a huge level as you think it will be.. thats just my opinion i could be wrong and theres only one way to find out. One thing i think we both can agree on is that the two biggest fights out there in womens mma is RR vs cyborg or gina.

        • kale

Ive fought too and had to stop from hand injuries but im done yet. As for MMA being bigger than the nfl that probably wont happen in america. Ufc isnt what it used to be and hasnt done a million buys since brock lesner. Guys like me wish pryde was still around and now hope m1 gets big. Ufc is now just an entertainment program.. cant even throw elbows at certain angels. Ufc wants new fans but there losing alot of the old ones. Every time theres a ppv they change who they say is the pfp best in the sport.. to mutch bs for me and i dont bye it

  • put me in the sauna coach

Lets just get really weird with this…Gina vs James Toney. winner gets that transgender fighter.

  • Yannick Messaoud

It is far beyond me how 2 hot women like this can beat each other up
